Places you see on the Hampi and Gokarna trip
The two halves of the trip, in the order most itineraries run them.
- Virupaksha Temple and Hampi Bazaar: The one temple still in worship after 700 years, with the ruined bazaar street running east from it.
- Vittala Temple and the stone chariot: The musical pillars and the chariot on the ten-rupee note.
- Matanga Hill at sunrise: The best view over the whole ruin field, a twenty-minute climb in the dark.
- The royal enclosure: The Lotus Mahal, the elephant stables and the stepped tank inside one walled quarter.
- Anegundi and the coracle crossing: The older settlement across the Tungabhadra, reached by coracle.
- Om Beach and Kudle Beach: The two main Gokarna beaches, Om shaped like the symbol, Kudle the wide one below the cliff path.
- The beach trek: The cliff walk linking Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise, about three hours end to end.
- Mahabaleshwar Temple and Gokarna town: The Atmalinga temple the town is built around, and the single street of it.
Hampi and Gokarna trip cost
₹8,999 to ₹18,499 per person, and what moves it is the length, the season and the room. 4 days from ₹8,999, 5 days from ₹15,499, 6 days from ₹16,999.
What the price includes
- Travel from the pick-up city and back on a group departure, or the car and driver on a private trip.
- Stays on twin or triple sharing.
- The meals named on the trip page, normally breakfast and dinner on a group departure.
- Sightseeing as listed, and a Travloger trip captain on every group departure.
What it does not include
- Entry at the Vittala temple complex, the coracle crossing and the battery bus, all paid on the spot.
- Water sports and boat rides at Gokarna, which are weather-dependent and closed in the monsoon.
- Lunches on travel days, anything personal, and travel insurance.
Who this trip suits
Solo travellers and friends: the fixed-date departures are mixed groups with a trip captain, from ₹8,999 per person, and rooms are shared by gender. About half of every group travels alone, so joining by yourself is the normal way to do this trip, not the exception.
Couples and families: the two halves balance — a walking, climbing, early-rising couple of days at Hampi, then nothing to do at Gokarna but the sea. The beach trek is a real cliff walk rather than a stroll, and it can be skipped for a boat between the beaches.
Best time to go, and getting to Hampi and Gokarna
Best time
- November to February, 18 to 32°C: The window for both halves: cool enough for the Hampi boulders and calm enough for the Gokarna sea.
- March to May, 24 to 40°C: Punishing on open stone at Hampi and humid on the coast; quiet, and the cheapest time to go.
- June to September, 23 to 31°C: The monsoon: green, dramatic and wet, with the Gokarna sea rough and the water sports closed.
Getting there
Hosapete is the railhead for Hampi and Gokarna Road for the coast, about six hours apart by road through the Western Ghats. Every trip here includes the road legs.
Or take them one at a time
Both run on their own, and Hampi also pairs north with the Chalukyan caves at Badami.
