Kashmir is a valley you move around slowly. Srinagar is the centre of it — Dal Lake, a shikara at dusk, and houseboats whose cedar panelling has not changed in a century. From there the day trips fan out: Gulmarg for the meadow and the gondola that lifts you towards Apharwat, Pahalgam for the Lidder river and the Betaab and Aru valleys, Sonmarg for the glacier road east. Doing that much needs four days at the least, and most people wish they had taken six. Beyond Sonmarg the road climbs the Zoji La and everything changes: green stops, the mountains go bare and brown, and you are in Ladakh — which is why so many of our routes carry on through Kargil to Leh rather than turning back. Trips run from four days to twelve, the longer ones being the full Srinagar-to-Leh crossing. All are private: your dates, your cab, your pace, with a local team on the ground rather than a fixed departure you have to fit into.
