Places to visit in Gokarna

- Mahabaleshwar Temple: The Shiva temple the town grew around, one of the seven Muktikshetras; open 6 am to 12:30 pm and 5 to 8 pm, entry free, with a strictly enforced dress code.
- Om Beach: Two crescents that trace the Om symbol, 6 km from town by road, with water sports from October to May.
- Kudle Beach: The largest beach, a ten-minute walk south of town over the headland, with cafes, beach stays and the best sunset.
- Half Moon Beach: A small cove reached by the cliff path from Om or by boat, quiet and good for a swim on a calm day.
- Paradise Beach: The most remote beach on the coast, reached on foot beyond Half Moon or by boat.
- The beach trek: Kudle to Om, Half Moon and Paradise along the cliffs, about 4 km one way; start early, carry water, and take a boat back from Half Moon or Paradise.
- Gokarna Main Beach: The town beach at the end of the temple street, busiest at sunset and on festival days.

- Mirjan Fort: A 16th-century laterite fort with moats and moss-green walls, 21 km north, usually visited on the way in or out.
- Yana Caves: Two black limestone rock towers, Bhairaveshwara and Mohini, in the Sahyadri forest 52 km east, with Vibhooti Falls close by.
- Murudeshwar: About 80 km south: the seaside temple with its giant Shiva statue, and the boats out to Netrani island for scuba diving.
Opening hours and tickets
Mahabaleshwar Temple is open 6:00 am to 12:30 pm and 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and entry is free. The dress code is enforced at the gate: men go into the inner sanctum bare-chested in a dhoti, women in a saree or salwar kameez, and jeans and shorts are not allowed. The beaches are open all day with no ticket; the boats between Om, Half Moon and Paradise run in the daytime and stop in rough weather and through the monsoon.
What to eat
The temple town is vegetarian: Udupi-style thalis, dosas and filter coffee on the temple street, and the coastal gadbad ice cream. The cafes on Kudle and Om serve fish thalis and fried fish alongside the backpacker breakfasts, and most beach stays cook dinner to order.

Best time to visit Gokarna and how to reach
Best time
October to March is the season: dry days, calm sea and cool evenings on the beach. April and May are hot but quiet; June to September is the monsoon, when the beaches are rough and most water activities stop, though Jog Falls and Dandeli are at their fullest.
- October to March, 20 to 32°C: The season: clear skies, a calm sea, water sports open at Om and the beach trek at its best. Christmas to New Year is the busiest and dearest fortnight.
- April and May, 26 to 35°C: Hot and humid by midday; beaches in the morning and evening, and the quietest stays of the year.
- June to September, 24 to 30°C: The monsoon: heavy rain, a rough sea and swimming unsafe on every beach, but the Western Ghats waterfalls and the Dandeli river are at their fullest.
What to pack
Light cotton, a hat and sunscreen for the beaches; shoes with grip for the cliff path between Om, Half Moon and Paradise, where flip-flops slip on the laterite; a dhoti, saree or salwar if you want to go inside the Mahabaleshwar temple; a torch for the unlit beach paths after dark, and a rain shell from June to September.
Getting there
Gokarna is about 700 km from Hyderabad, an overnight road journey of 12 to 13 hours. That is why the fixed-date group trips leave from Hyderabad on Friday night and are back by Monday morning: you sleep on the bus and wake up on the coast. There is no direct train; the nearest convenient rail route runs via Hubli.
Gokarna is about 480 km from Bangalore, a 9 to 10 hour overnight bus ride, which is how the Bangalore group departures travel. By train the Karwar Express from Yesvantpur reaches Gokarna Road station in the morning; a self-drive along NH48 and NH63 via Hubli takes about nine hours.
Chennai to Gokarna is about 900 km, so most travellers from Chennai either take the train to Mangalore or Madgaon and continue on the Konkan line to Gokarna Road, or fly to Goa and drive about three hours down the coast. A private trip can start with a pick-up at Gokarna Road, Kumta or Goa airport.

Gokarna is the quieter, cheaper coast: a temple town with five beaches strung along cliffs, cafes instead of clubs, and a walk between the beaches instead of a scooter ride. Goa has far more beaches, the nightlife, the water-sports strips and the flights. They are neighbours — Goa's Dabolim airport is about 149 km north of Gokarna — so a longer trip can do both: Goa for the energy, then two quiet nights at Kudle or Om.
