Bhutan is small and deliberate, and it is one of the few places where the pace of a trip is set by the country rather than by you. Almost every route runs through the same three valleys. Paro holds the airport and Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery on its cliff, which is the walk everyone comes for. Thimphu is the capital and still has no traffic lights — a policeman directs the junction by hand — with the Buddha Dordenma looking down over the valley. Punakha is the warmest and, to a lot of people, the finest: its dzong sits on the tongue of land where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet, and you reach it over the Dochula pass and its 108 chortens. Our Bhutan trips run five to eleven days, and one route carries on into Darjeeling and Gangtok rather than flying straight home. All are private and customisable. Bhutan also charges a government Sustainable Development Fee for every night you stay — we confirm the current rate with your quote, so it is never a surprise at the border.
