Spiti is the emptiest place most people will ever drive through. Beyond Kinnaur the green simply stops: the valley turns to grey and ochre rock, the river runs milky below, and the villages are small clusters of whitewashed houses with barley terraces that seem impossibly small for the space around them. Kaza is the main town and the base for the rest — Key Monastery stacked up its hill, Kibber and Langza above it, Hikkim with what is usually described as the world's highest post office, and Chandratal, a crescent lake at the far end that is only reachable in the warmer months. Pin Valley goes off to the south into a national park. There are two ways to do it: in from Shimla through Kinnaur, gaining height slowly over several days, and out over the Kunzum La to Manali, which is the shorter and much rougher side. Doing it in that direction is not a preference, it is altitude sense. Trips run seven to nine days, private and built around your dates.
