The estates run right to the roadside — coffee under the shade of silver oak, pepper vines climbing the trunks, cardamom in the wetter corners — and staying on one of them is really the point of coming. Madikeri is the main town, with the fort and Raja's Seat for sunset over the valleys. Around it: Abbey Falls and Iruppu Falls, both best just after the rains; the Dubare elephant camp on the Cauvery, where the morning is spent with the elephants; and Talacauvery at the river's source, high enough that the view goes on for a very long way. The Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe, with its golden temple, sits half an hour outside and surprises most first-time visitors. Coorg pairs easily with Mysore on the way in, with Chikmagalur further north for more of the same, or with Wayanad over the Kerala border.
