Himachal is really several mountain regions that happen to share a state, and picking between them matters more than picking the dates. Shimla is the old summer capital, reached by a toy train, with a ridge you can walk end to end. Manali is the busiest base — Solang for the snow and the paragliding, the Atal Tunnel putting Lahaul within a morning's drive, and Kasol and the Parvati valley an hour away for a much slower kind of trip. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are somewhere else entirely: Tibetan monasteries, prayer flags, the Dhauladhar wall rising straight behind the town. Dalhousie and Khajjiar sit quieter in the west. Furthest and hardest is Spiti, over the passes past Kaza, where the green stops altogether. Our Himachal trips run five to twelve days, which is the difference between one valley done well and a circuit across several. All of them are private — your dates, your vehicle, your pace.
