Edakkal Caves: Neolithic carvings 4,000 to 8,000 years old, reached by a 1.5 km climb from Ambalavayal; closed on Mondays.
Chembra Peak: The heart-shaped lake on the way up the 2,100 m peak; a forest permit and an early start are needed, and the trail closes in heavy rain.
Banasura Sagar Dam: The largest earth dam in India, with speedboats on the reservoir and islands you can walk out to in summer.
Soochipara (Sentinel Rock) Falls: A three-tier fall with a pool at the bottom, a 15-minute walk through forest.
Kuruva Island: A 950-acre river island of evergreen forest crossed on bamboo rafts; closed during the monsoon.
Thirunelli Temple and Pakshipathalam: An ancient temple under Brahmagiri with a forest trek beyond it, in the north of the district.
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Muthanga: Dawn and afternoon jeep safaris for elephant, gaur and deer on the Bandipur side.
