Places to visit in Hampi
Every trip on this page covers the places below; a private trip can drop one and add another.
- Virupaksha Temple: The living temple at the end of Hampi bazaar, 7th century and still in worship, with the pinhole-camera chamber behind it.
- Vittala Temple and the stone chariot: The musical pillars and the chariot on the ₹50 note; an electric buggy runs the last kilometre.
- Matanga Hill: The sunrise climb over the whole ruin field; 30 minutes up, start in the dark.
- The Royal Enclosure: The Lotus Mahal, elephant stables, the stepped tank and the queen's bath, all on one ticket with Vittala.
- Hippie Island (Virupapur Gaddi): Across the river by coracle, the rice-field side with cafes and the sunset from Sanapur lake.
- Sanapur Lake: A short ride from Hippie Island for coracle rides and a swim in the season.
- Anegundi and Anjanadri Hill: The older village across the river and the 575 steps up to Hanuman's birthplace for sunrise.
A 3 day Hampi trip, day by day
A private trip runs the same plan at your own pace; a group departure follows it to the minute.
- Day 1: arrive at Hosapete, Virupaksha and the bazaar, the underground Shiva temple and the royal enclosure, sunset at Hemakuta hill.
- Day 2: sunrise on Matanga hill, Vittala and the stone chariot with the buggy, lunch, then the coracle across to Hippie Island and Sanapur lake.
- Day 3: Anjanadri hill at dawn, Anegundi village, and the train or bus out by afternoon.
Hampi trip cost and what the price covers
Hampi packages start at ₹4,499 per person: ₹4,499 for 2 days. That covers the stays, the local travel, the sightseeing and activities each trip page lists; the journey from your city is quoted with the trip so you can pick the train, bus or flight.
What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.
Hampi for friends, couples and families
Friends and solo travellers: 2 fixed-date group trips from ₹4,499, travel and trip captain included, rooms shared by gender: 2 Days Hampi Weekend Getaway from Bangalore (2D/1N, from ₹4,499); 2 Days Hampi Weekend Getaway from Hyderabad (2D/1N, from ₹4,999).
Families and couples take the private trips: the same places at your own pace, with the room category and the car chosen for your group.
Best time to visit Hampi and how to reach
Best time
October to February is the season, with cool mornings for the ruins and lake afternoons at Sanapur. March to May is very hot, so sightseeing moves to early mornings and evenings. The monsoon, June to September, is green and quiet.
- November to February, 15 to 30°C: The season: cool enough to walk the ruins all morning, and the Hampi Utsav falls in this window.
- March to May, 25 to 42°C: Very hot; sightseeing only at dawn and after four, and the river is low.
- June to October, 22 to 32°C: A light monsoon greens the boulders and fills the Tungabhadra; coracles may pause when the river runs high.
What to pack
Cotton, a hat and plenty of water: the ruins have almost no shade. Shoes you can walk five kilometres in, something covering shoulders and knees for Virupaksha, and a torch for the early climb up Matanga.
Getting there
Hampi is about 380 km from Hyderabad, seven to eight hours by road, so the fixed-date group trips leave on Friday night and reach Hosapete for breakfast. By train, Hosapete is the railhead, 13 km from the ruins.
Hosapete, still written Hospet, is Hampi's own railhead and bus stand, 13 km from the ruins and about 25 minutes by auto or cab. Every train into Hampi stops here, and a private trip can simply start at the station on the morning you arrive.
Hampi is about 340 km from Bangalore, six to seven hours by road, and the group departures travel overnight on Friday. The Hampi Express from Bengaluru reaches Hosapete early in the morning and is the classic way in.
Every Hampi trip we run
This page answers one question. The hub lists the whole Hampi catalogue — every length, every departure city, group departures and private trips — with the same prices.
Kerala after Hampi
Kerala is the next trip south, and the same team plans it: Munnar's tea slopes, Thekkady and a night on an Alleppey houseboat, as a private trip on your dates. Five days covers the classic circuit from Kochi.
