Hampi does not look like anywhere else in India. The landscape came first — miles of granite boulders piled on each other above the Tungabhadra river, as though they had been stacked deliberately — and then Vijayanagara was built through it, until by the sixteenth century this was one of the largest cities on earth. What is left is spread over a very wide area: the Virupaksha temple still in daily worship at the bazaar end, the stone chariot at Vittala, the Lotus Mahal and elephant stables in the royal enclosure, and a hundred smaller shrines you come across between them. It is best seen slowly, by bicycle or on foot, with the middle of the day spent indoors. Climb Matanga hill for sunrise and the whole boulder field goes orange at once. Hospet is the railhead, Badami and its cave temples are within reach to the north-west, and Gokarna's beaches are a half-day south. What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

October to February is the season, with cool mornings for the ruins and lake afternoons at Sanapur. March to May is very hot, so sightseeing moves to early mornings and evenings. The monsoon, June to September, is green and quiet.
Cotton, a hat and plenty of water: the ruins have almost no shade. Shoes you can walk five kilometres in, something covering shoulders and knees for Virupaksha, and a torch for the early climb up Matanga.
Hampi is about 380 km from Hyderabad, seven to eight hours by road, so the fixed-date group trips leave on Friday night and reach Hosapete for breakfast. By train, Hosapete is the railhead, 13 km from the ruins.
Hosapete, still written Hospet, is Hampi's own railhead and bus stand, 13 km from the ruins and about 25 minutes by auto or cab. Every train into Hampi stops here, and a private trip can simply start at the station on the morning you arrive.
Hampi is about 340 km from Bangalore, six to seven hours by road, and the group departures travel overnight on Friday. The Hampi Express from Bengaluru reaches Hosapete early in the morning and is the classic way in.
