5 days in Manali: what travellers ask

From people just like you

During this memorable trip, it wasn't merely a voyage but an enriching adventure shared with dear friends and family. The experience proved to be exceptionally comfortable, justifying every penny spent. Opting for this option was a decision I would have regretted not making, given the unparalleled comfort and joy it brought. A pivotal factor in this delightful journey was our travel guide, Deepika. Her remarkable care and attention to detail ensured that every moment was free of discomfort, making this expedition truly special.

Our Keral trip was good, it was a well organised and traveloger team took care of everything so well. However, our trip was during christmas and obviously all the places were crowed and roads were blocked. Also, it was informed to us that the places will be crowed. So, we had no expectations and had good vacation.

  • Places: Hidimba Devi Temple and Old Manali, Vashisht's hot springs, Solang Valley, the snow at Gulaba and Rohtang Pass, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, Naggar and Kullu, and Kasol and Manikaran in the Parvati valley.

  • Best time: March to June is the main season, with pleasant days and snow still on the high points; Rohtang usually opens around May.
  • Weather: Manali sits at about 2,050 m at the head of the Kullu valley, on the Beas.
  • Trip type: private trips planned around your dates and your group.

Places to visit in Manali

These are the places Manali trips are built from. Each trip page lists exactly which of them it covers, and a private trip can swap one for another.

  • Hidimba Devi Temple: The pagoda-roofed wooden temple of 1553 in a cedar forest above the town, the first stop on every Manali day.
  • Old Manali and Manu Temple: The old village above the Manalsu stream, with its cafes, guesthouses and the temple to the sage Manu.
  • Vashisht: The village across the Beas with its old stone temple and the natural hot springs beside it, a few kilometres from town.
  • Mall Road and the Tibetan monastery: The town's walking street for shopping and street food, and the monastery close by with handicraft and carpet shops around it.
  • Van Vihar: The deodar forest park on the bank of the Beas, for a quiet walk in the middle of town.
  • Solang Valley: The wide meadow about 14 km above Manali for paragliding, zorbing, the ropeway and ATV rides, and skiing and snow in winter, all paid for on the spot.
  • Kothi, Gulaba and Marhi: The stops on the road up towards Rohtang: the Kothi gorge, the Gulaba snow point and the roadside settlement of Marhi, where the snow lasts well after it has gone from town.
  • Rohtang Pass: The high pass above the valley, about 3,980 m, for the snow and the view over Lahaul; on a permit, and only when it is open.
  • Atal Tunnel and Sissu: The road tunnel of about 9 km under the Rohtang ridge, about 25 km from Manali, and Sissu's waterfall on the Lahaul side; the way in to Spiti and Leh.
  • Naggar Castle: The old timber and stone castle looking over the Beas, about 20 km down the valley, on the drive between Manali and Kullu.
  • Kullu: The Raghunath Temple, the shawl weaving units along the road, and the Dussehra fair every October.
  • Kasol and Manikaran: The Parvati valley, about three hours from Manali: Kasol's riverside cafes and the gurudwara at Manikaran, where the langar is cooked in the hot springs.

A 5 day Manali trip from Delhi, day by day

Every trip is private, so the plan below is a starting point: the days, the hotels and the pace are set around you.

  • Day 1: leave Delhi in the evening on the overnight road journey to Manali.
  • Day 2: reach Manali in the morning; Hidimba Devi Temple, Vashisht's hot springs, Van Vihar, the Tibetan monastery and Mall Road.
  • Day 3: Solang Valley by way of Kothi, Gulaba and Marhi, for paragliding, zorbing or just the view, paid on the spot.
  • Day 4: into the Parvati valley for the gurudwara and hot springs at Manikaran and the cafes of Kasol, then the overnight journey back.
  • Day 5: arrive in Delhi in the morning.

Manali trip cost and what the price covers

Manali packages start at ₹18,499 per person: ₹18,499 for 5 days. That covers the stays, the road travel each trip page lists (an overnight AC coach from Delhi or a private cab), the sightseeing and the meals it names. Flights or trains to Delhi or Chandigarh are not included, and neither are the activities at Solang Valley, the Rohtang permit and the local vehicle to the snow point, or entry tickets, which are paid on the spot.

What moves the price is the season, the hotel category, whether the trip uses an overnight coach or a private cab from Delhi, and the group size. May and June and the Christmas to New Year week are the busiest and dearest; the monsoon months cost least. A private trip prices the car and the rooms for your group, so four to six people sharing brings the per-person price down. The journey to Delhi or Chandigarh, Solang Valley activities, the Rohtang permit, entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, and 5% GST is added to the package price.

Shimla and Manali packages

The classic circuit: Shimla's Ridge, Mall Road and Jakhoo temple with a day at Kufri, then the drive up the Beas through Mandi and Kullu to Manali for Solang Valley and, when it is open, Rohtang. By private cab from Delhi or Chandigarh, or with an overnight coach at one end.

1 trip on this page, from ₹22,599 per person: 5 Days Shimla Manali Getaway from Delhi (5D/4N, from ₹22,599).

Manali with Kasol and Jibhi packages

The Parvati valley as a day out or a night: Kasol's riverside cafes and the gurudwara and hot springs at Manikaran. The backpacking plan goes on to Jibhi, Chehni Kothi and the forest walk from Jalori Pass to Serolsar Lake.

1 trip on this page, from ₹18,499 per person: 5 Days Manali Kasol Getaway (5D/4N, from ₹18,499).

Manali for friends, couples and families

Families and couples take the private trips: the same places at your own pace, with the room category and the car chosen for your group.

Best time to visit Manali and how to reach

Best time

March to June is the main season, with pleasant days and snow still on the high points; Rohtang usually opens around May. Mid-September to November is clear and quieter, with the Kullu Dussehra in October. December to February is for snow in Manali and Solang, and July and August are the monsoon, when landslides can slow the hill roads.

  • March to June, 8 to 28°C: The main season: pleasant days, snow still at Solang early on and on the high points, and Rohtang usually opening around May. May and June are the busiest weeks in Manali.
  • July to mid-September, 15 to 25°C: The monsoon: heavy rain on the hill roads, landslides that can hold up a drive for hours, and mist over the views. The valley is green, the hotels quiet, and the road on to Leh is open.
  • Mid-September to November, 2 to 20°C: Clear skies and crisp air after the rain, with fewer crowds; the Kullu Dussehra fills the valley in October, and nights turn cold by November.
  • December to February, -5 to 10°C: Winter: snow usually falls on Manali and Solang from late December, Rohtang is shut, and heavy snow can close the road beyond Solang for a day or more. Christmas to New Year is busy.

What to pack

From March to June, light woollens and a jacket for the evenings, which turn cold in Manali even in May. From October to February, thermals, a heavy jacket, gloves and a woollen cap, and waterproof shoes with a good grip for the snow at Solang; snow suits and boots can usually be hired at Solang and on the Rohtang road. In the monsoon, a rain jacket and quick-dry clothes. Carry sunglasses and sunscreen for the glare off the snow, comfortable walking shoes for Old Manali and Mall Road, a scarf or cap to cover your head at the Manikaran gurudwara, and a neck pillow and a light jacket for the overnight coach from Delhi.

Getting there

From Hyderabad, fly or take the train to Delhi, where most of our Manali trips start, or fly to Chandigarh for the trip that begins there. From Delhi the journey is by road, about 530 km: an overnight AC coach of twelve to fourteen hours or a private cab. Manali's nearest airport is at Bhuntar near Kullu, about 50 km away, with a few flights from Delhi that bad weather can cancel. The journey to the start city is not part of the package.

From Bengaluru, fly to Delhi or Chandigarh and join the trip there. Most Manali trips start in Delhi and go up by overnight AC coach or private cab, about 530 km; from Chandigarh it is about 300 km and eight to nine hours by road. Manali has no railway, and the flight is booked separately.

From Chennai, fly or take the train to Delhi, the start point for most of our Manali trips, or fly to Chandigarh for the trip that begins there. From the start city the whole trip is by road into the hills, since Manali has no railway and its small airport at Bhuntar has few flights. The journey to the start city is not part of the package.

Permits and fees

Rohtang Pass needs a vehicle permit issued online by the Kullu administration, with a limited number each day. The pass usually opens around May once the snow is cleared and closes on maintenance days, so our trips plan it as an add-on when it is open; the permit and the local vehicle to the snow point are not in the fare. Solang Valley, Old Manali, Vashisht, Kasol and Manikaran need no permit. Rules change from season to season, so confirm before you book.

Manali compared with Kashmir and Ladakh

Manali or Kashmir? Manali is the road trip from Delhi, an overnight coach away, with Solang Valley, the snow towards Rohtang and the Atal Tunnel, and Kasol or Shimla close enough to add. Kashmir is a flight or the train into Srinagar and gives more variety in the same five days: Dal Lake and a houseboat night, the Mughal gardens, the Gulmarg gondola and the valleys around Pahalgam and Sonmarg. Starting from Delhi by road, Manali is the easier pick; flying in from the south, Kashmir is the bigger trip for the time.

Manali or Ladakh? Manali is green hill country at about 2,000 m, easy for a first mountain trip and good in most months. Ladakh is a high cold desert at 3,500 m and above, with Khardung La, Nubra and Pangong, and needs two easy days in Leh before going higher; it is at its best from June to September. The two meet on the Manali–Leh road, open only in the warmer months, which is how our overland trips and the bike expeditions run.
