July to September is the monsoon, green and cheaper but humid, with the main Ranthambore safari zones usually closed; April to June is fierce summer heat, past 40°C in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.

Diwali, Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks.

What to pack
Light cotton and linen for the day, a sun hat, sunglasses and strong sunscreen, and a scarf for the dust in the dunes. From November to February add a warm jacket and a layer for the evening, because Jaipur nights drop close to 5°C and the desert camps are colder. Comfortable shoes for the long ramps at Amber and Mehrangarh, clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples and the Ajmer dargah, where a head covering is expected, and something to leave leather items in at the Jain temples of Ranakpur and Dilwara, which do not allow them inside.
Getting there
From Hyderabad, fly to Jaipur, about two hours in the air, or to Udaipur or Jodhpur when the trip starts there; some routes connect through Delhi or Mumbai. By train Jaipur is more than a day away. Every trip begins with a pick-up at the airport or station in its start city, and the Golden Triangle plans start in Delhi.
From Bengaluru, fly to Jaipur, about two and a half hours, or to Udaipur or Jodhpur for the trips that start there, some with a connection. The train takes well over a day, so most travellers fly. Your car and driver meet you at the airport or station; the Golden Triangle plans start in Delhi instead.
From Chennai, fly to Jaipur, about two and a half to three hours, or connect through Delhi or Mumbai to Udaipur or Jodhpur. The trips start with a pick-up at the airport or station in the start city, and the Golden Triangle plans begin in Delhi.
Permits and fees
No permit is needed for Indian travellers anywhere on these routes, including the drive to Tanot and Longewala near the border; carry a photo ID. Ranthambore safaris are booked in advance through the Rajasthan forest department with each traveller's ID details, and the trip page says whether the safari is in the price. The core safari zones usually close from July to September for the monsoon, with some outer zones open; confirm before you book. Monument tickets are bought at the gate on most plans and cost more for foreign nationals.
