Kashmir and Ladakh: what travellers ask

June to September is the season, when every road and circuit is open and the bike expeditions run; June and July are the busiest, September is calmer. April, May and October are cold shoulder months flown into Leh, and November to March is winter, for frozen lakes and serious cold.

From people just like you

During this memorable trip, it wasn't merely a voyage but an enriching adventure shared with dear friends and family. The experience proved to be exceptionally comfortable, justifying every penny spent. Opting for this option was a decision I would have regretted not making, given the unparalleled comfort and joy it brought. A pivotal factor in this delightful journey was our travel guide, Deepika. Her remarkable care and attention to detail ensured that every moment was free of discomfort, making this expedition truly special.

Our Keral trip was good, it was a well organised and traveloger team took care of everything so well. However, our trip was during christmas and obviously all the places were crowed and roads were blocked. Also, it was informed to us that the places will be crowed. So, we had no expectations and had good vacation.

Places you see on the Kashmir and Ladakh trip

The two halves of the trip, in the order most itineraries run them.

  • Srinagar and Dal Lake: The houseboats and the shikaras on Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and the old city, where the road trip begins.
  • Sonamarg: The meadow town on the Sindh river at the foot of the Zoji La, the last green stop before Ladakh.
  • Zoji La: The pass between Kashmir and Ladakh, where the green valleys give way to bare mountain.
  • Drass and the Kargil War Memorial: The Tiger Hill viewpoint and the memorial to the 1999 war, on the first day into Ladakh.
  • Lamayuru and Alchi: The moonland around Lamayuru monastery and the old murals at Alchi, on the Kargil to Leh road.

  • Pangong Tso: The long blue lake over the Chang La pass, with a night in the camps on its shore.

Kashmir and Ladakh trip cost

₹34,499 to ₹47,000 per person, and what moves it is the length, the season and the room. 11 days from ₹30,000, 12 days from ₹47,000.

What the price includes

  • Travel from the pick-up city and back on a group departure, or the car and driver on a private trip.
  • Stays on twin or triple sharing.
  • The meals named on the trip page, normally breakfast and dinner on a group departure.
  • Sightseeing as listed, and a Travloger trip captain on every group departure.

What it does not include

  • Flights: into Srinagar for the road trip, and home from Srinagar at the end of the bike expedition and the 12-day circuit.
  • Lunches and any meal not on the trip page, monastery and monument entry fees, and anything personal.
  • Travel insurance; on the bike expedition, riding gloves, the refundable bike deposit and any damage costs, as its page lists.

Who this trip suits

Solo travellers and friends: the fixed-date departures are mixed groups with a trip captain, from ₹30,000 per person, and rooms are shared by gender. About half of every group travels alone, so joining by yourself is the normal way to do this trip, not the exception.

Couples and families: the road trip runs as a private trip, with your own car and driver and the pace set by you. It crosses passes above 5,000 m and has long driving days on the Manali road, which is worth weighing with very young children or elderly parents; ask your doctor before any altitude trip. The bike expedition is for riders who already ride a geared motorcycle comfortably, with a pillion seat for a partner.

Best time to go, and getting to Kashmir and Ladakh

Best time

  • June to September, 10 to 30°C: The season for the circuit: the Srinagar and Manali roads into Ladakh are usually both open, Kashmir is green and Pangong is at its bluest. July and August are the busiest weeks.
  • May and October, 0 to 22°C: The shoulder months: the roads can open late or close early with snow, so the full circuit is not certain; nights are close to freezing in Ladakh.
  • November to April, -15 to 15°C: The high roads are closed. Kashmir and Ladakh are then two separate trips, each reached by air.

Getting there

Srinagar and Leh both have flights from Delhi and the other big cities; neither has a railway. By road, Srinagar to Leh is about 420 km over two days through Sonamarg, Zoji La and Kargil, and Leh to Manali about 430 to 470 km over two days through Sarchu or Jispa and the Atal Tunnel. Both roads usually open from about June to mid-October as the snow is cleared, which is why the circuit runs in summer; outside it, Kashmir and Ladakh are separate trips by air.
