Places you see on the Mysore and Ooty trip
The two halves of the trip, in the order most itineraries run them.
- Mysore Palace: The Wadiyar palace of 1912; go for the 7 pm Sunday and public-holiday illumination, 97,000 bulbs for 45 minutes.
- Chamundi Hill and the Nandi: 1,000 steps or a road to the Chamundeshwari temple, with the monolithic Nandi on the way down.
- Brindavan Gardens: The terraced gardens below the KRS dam, with the musical fountain after dark.
- Bandipur and Mudumalai: The forest road between the two halves, with a chance of elephant and gaur; it is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am.
- The Nilgiri Mountain Railway: The UNESCO-listed rack railway; the Ooty to Coonoor leg takes about an hour and is the easy version of the ride.
- Doddabetta Peak: The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, clearest before the mid-morning mist.
- Government Botanical Garden and Ooty Lake: The 1848 garden with its fossil tree, and the boating lake in the middle of town.
- Coonoor: Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose: The quieter hill town 20 km down, with the tea estates and the valley viewpoints.
Mysore and Ooty trip cost
₹9,999 to ₹21,999 per person, and what moves it is the length, the season and the room. 4 days from ₹9,999, 6 days from ₹16,499, 8 days from ₹21,999.
What the price includes
- Travel from the pick-up city and back on a group departure, or the car and driver on a private trip.
- Stays on twin or triple sharing.
- The meals named on the trip page, normally breakfast and dinner on a group departure.
- Sightseeing as listed, and a Travloger trip captain on every group departure.
What it does not include
- Entry tickets at the palace, Brindavan gardens, the Ooty gardens and Doddabetta.
- The Nilgiri toy train ticket, booked separately and sold out in season.
- Safari tickets at Bandipur or Mudumalai, lunches on travel days, anything personal, and travel insurance.
Who this trip suits
Solo travellers and friends: the fixed-date departures are mixed groups with a trip captain, from ₹9,999 per person, and rooms are shared by gender. About half of every group travels alone, so joining by yourself is the normal way to do this trip, not the exception.
Couples and families: a palace, a fountain show, a forest drive and a train ride — nothing on this route asks for a climb, and the two halves are different enough that nobody gets bored. As a private trip the Bandipur leg can be timed for the evening safari instead of the drive.
Best time to go, and getting to Mysore and Ooty
Best time
- October to February, 5 to 29°C: Mild in Mysuru and cold and clear up in the Nilgiris, with frost on some December mornings; the best light for Doddabetta and the toy train.
- March to June, 15 to 34°C: Hot by afternoon in Mysuru and pleasant in Ooty, which is exactly why the summer season fills the hill station; the flower show takes May.
- July to September, 12 to 28°C: A light monsoon in Mysuru, a heavy one in the Nilgiris with mist on the viewpoints; the quietest months and the lowest prices.
Getting there
Mysuru has a station and a small airport; Ooty has neither, and is reached from Mysuru in about four hours through Bandipur, or from Coimbatore in three up the other side of the ghat. Every trip here includes the road legs.
Or take them one at a time
Each also runs on its own: Mysuru for the palace and the gardens, Ooty for the Nilgiris and the toy train.
