Ooty is the queen of the Nilgiris, and the journey up is half the point: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam through forest and tea to over two thousand metres, a UNESCO-listed line that takes five slow, lovely hours. The town itself spreads around its lake and botanical gardens, with Doddabetta - the highest point in the Nilgiris - a short drive up for a view over the whole blue range. Coonoor, half an hour down the line, is the quieter half: Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose, with tea estates on every slope between. The hills work in every direction - Mysore's palace sits below to the north, Wayanad's forests and Coorg's coffee to the west, and several of our longer routes run the full southern circuit through all of them.
