Places to visit in Pondicherry
Every trip on this page covers the places below; a private trip can drop one and add another.
- The French Quarter (White Town): Mustard-yellow walls, bougainvillea and street names in two languages; walk it early or by cycle.
- Promenade and Rock Beach: The 1.5 km seafront, closed to traffic in the evening, with the Gandhi statue and the old lighthouse.
- Auroville and the Matrimandir: The international township 12 km north; the Matrimandir viewing point needs a free booking a day ahead.
- Sri Aurobindo Ashram: The main house on Rue de la Marine, open mornings and evenings, silent inside.
- Paradise Beach: Reached by a boat from Chunnambar backwaters; a sandbar beach with shacks, best before noon.
- Serenity and Auroville Beaches: The swimmable stretches north of town, quieter than Promenade.
- Basilica of the Sacred Heart: A Gothic revival church in orange and white with stained glass from France.
- Arikamedu: The Roman trading post excavation 7 km south, for the ruins and the river.
