Kashmir questions, answered

What is the best time to do this Kashmir itinerary?
The trip runs all year. March to May brings the tulips and blossom, June to August gives you the greenest meadows and the most comfortable weather, September to October is the golden chinar season, and December to February turns Gulmarg into a snow destination. Do note that heavy snowfall can occasionally affect the Gulmarg and Sonmarg roads in peak winter.
Are the Gondola tickets and pony rides included?
No. The Gulmarg Gondola, pony and sledge rides, and the Thajiwas Glacier pony ride are paid directly on the spot. Gondola tickets in particular are issued by the state cable-car corporation and are subject to availability on the day, so we recommend booking them as soon as you reach Gulmarg.
Why are local union cabs needed at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg?
Local transport unions do not allow outside vehicles beyond the main cab stand at these three points. Your private vehicle will drop you at the stand, and a local union cab takes you on the sightseeing circuit. These union charges are fixed by the union and are paid directly, which is why they sit under exclusions.
Is the houseboat stay comfortable for families and senior citizens?
Yes. The houseboats we use are moored on the Dal Lake shoreline, reached by a short shikara transfer, and have en-suite rooms, running hot water, heating and room service. If anyone in your group has mobility concerns, tell us in advance and we will place you on a boat with the shortest walk from the ghat, or move that night to a lakeside hotel instead.
How much walking is involved on this trip?
Very little. All sightseeing is point-to-point by vehicle, and the walks at the Mughal Gardens, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are short and on flat ground. The only uphill sections are the optional pony rides at Pahalgam and Thajiwas Glacier, which you can skip entirely.
What should we pack?
Even in summer the mornings and evenings are cool, so carry a light jacket and a warm layer for Gulmarg and Sonmarg. From November to March you will need proper winter wear, gloves, a cap and waterproof shoes, snow boots and heavy jackets can also be hired at Gulmarg. Sunscreen and sunglasses matter year-round at this altitude.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Yes. We can add or drop nights, swap the Sonmarg day for Doodhpathri or the Tulip Garden in season, extend to Yusmarg or Dachigam, or upgrade the hotels and the houseboat category. Tell your travel consultant what you have in mind and we will rework the plan and the quote for you.
