Kashmir questions, answered

What are the stays like on the offbeat/Gurez route?
These are remote border areas, so accommodation is basic but clean, homestays, cottages and camps on twin-sharing, with breakfast and dinner included. Hot water and electricity can be limited and mobile network is patchy, which is part of the experience. Carry a power bank and some cash.
Are permits needed for the border/Gurez areas?
Gurez, Keran and the LoC villages sit in protected border zones with multiple army check-posts. Indian nationals need a valid government photo ID; foreign nationals face restrictions and should confirm eligibility with us well in advance. We handle the standard permits; carry several ID copies.
What is the best time to do this Kashmir trip?
The trip runs all year. March-May brings tulips and blossom, June-August gives the greenest meadows and the most comfortable weather, September-October is the golden chinar season, and December-February turns Gulmarg into a snow destination. Heavy snowfall can occasionally affect the Gulmarg and Sonmarg roads in peak winter.
Are the Gondola tickets and pony rides included?
No. The Gulmarg Gondola, pony and sledge rides, and the Thajiwas Glacier pony ride are paid directly on the spot. Gondola tickets are issued by the state cable-car corporation and are subject to availability on the day, so book them as soon as you reach Gulmarg.
Why are local union cabs needed at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg?
Local transport unions do not allow outside vehicles beyond the main cab stand at these points. Your private vehicle drops you at the stand and a local union cab takes you on the sightseeing circuit. These union charges are fixed and paid directly, which is why they sit under exclusions.
What should we pack?
Even in summer the mornings and evenings are cool, so carry a light jacket and a warm layer for Gulmarg and Sonmarg. From November to March you need proper winter wear, gloves, cap and waterproof shoes, snow boots and jackets can also be hired at Gulmarg. Sunscreen and sunglasses matter year-round at this altitude.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Yes. We can add or drop nights, swap days, upgrade the hotels and houseboat category, or extend to Yusmarg, Doodhpathri or Dachigam. Tell your travel consultant what you have in mind and we will rework the plan and the quote.
