North Goa — Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator — is the busy one: markets, shacks, nightlife, and beaches that are rarely empty. South Goa is where the sand gets wider and the crowds thin out, at Colva, Palolem and the long quiet stretches between them. In the middle sits Panaji, which most people skip and shouldn't: the Latin quarter at Fontainhas is a grid of ochre and blue Portuguese houses, and Old Goa's cathedrals a short drive away are the largest churches in Asia. Inland, the state turns green and wet, with spice farms and the Dudhsagar falls on the Karnataka border — which is also why several of our routes carry on to Dandeli for the river. What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.
Dandeli's rafting camps on the Kali river are about three hours from South Goa, which turns a beach trip into a river-and-beach one; it is how the Hyderabad group trip runs.

November to February is the season: dry, sunny days, a calm sea and every shack and water sport open, with Christmas and New Year the busiest weeks. March to May is hot and quieter; June to September is the monsoon, when the sea is closed to swimming and water sports but the state is green and at its cheapest.
Light cotton, swimwear, sunscreen and a hat for the beaches; something covering shoulders and knees for the Old Goa churches and the temples at Ponda; walking shoes for the forts and the Dudhsagar trail; a rain jacket from June to September.
Goa is about 650 km from Hyderabad: a flight of about an hour and a quarter into Dabolim or Mopa, or an overnight road journey of 12 to 13 hours through Hubli and Belagavi, which is how the South Goa and Dandeli group trip travels.
