The question people actually ask is which is cheaper, so: Pondicherry, and not by a little.
Where the money goes
In Pondicherry the beaches are free, the town is small enough to walk or cover on a scooter at around ₹300 a day, and Auroville costs nothing to enter. There are no cover charges because there is no club scene to charge for. What you spend is the room and how you got there.
In Goa the week is set by shack prices, taxi fares — which are famously the expensive part — and the season. A December week in North Goa can run to double a December week in Pondicherry for the same standard of room.
What the evenings look like
This is the real difference. Pondicherry’s evening is the Promenade: 1.5 km of seafront closed to traffic after dark, the Gandhi statue, the old pier, and dinner in the French quarter among pastel colonial houses on mustard-yellow streets. It is pleasant and it is quiet, and by eleven it is over.
Goa’s evening is the reason most people go to Goa. If that is what you want, Pondicherry will disappoint you, and no amount of it being cheaper will fix that.
The beaches
Be honest about this one. Pondicherry’s town beach is rocky, and Promenade Beach is a seafront rather than a swimming beach. Paradise Beach is a proper sandbar but it is reached by boat across the backwater. Goa simply has better beaches and more of them.
What Pondicherry has instead is Auroville and the Matrimandir, which needs a booking to view, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in town, and Pichavaram’s mangrove forest an hour south — none of which has an equivalent in Goa.
Getting there
Pondicherry is reached through Chennai, 95 km up the East Coast Road, about ninety minutes, with Mahabalipuram’s shore temple and rock carvings on the way. From Bengaluru it is roughly 310 km and six hours. Note there is no Vande Bharat to Puducherry itself — the fast trains stop at Villupuram, 40 km inland, or Chennai Egmore, and the last stretch is by road.
Goa has an airport and the Konkan railway, which for anyone outside south India usually settles the argument on its own.
Which week to book
Pondicherry for a long weekend when you want to read, walk and eat well without spending much. Goa for a week when the evenings matter as much as the days. They are not competing for the same trip, whatever the price comparison suggests.
