6 days in Himachal: what travellers ask

March to June is the main season, warm below and still snowy on the high passes. July to September is the monsoon, when landslides can close hill roads at short notice. October and November are clear, quiet and cold. December to February is snow around Manali and Shimla, with the higher routes shut.

From people just like you

During this memorable trip, it wasn't merely a voyage but an enriching adventure shared with dear friends and family. The experience proved to be exceptionally comfortable, justifying every penny spent. Opting for this option was a decision I would have regretted not making, given the unparalleled comfort and joy it brought. A pivotal factor in this delightful journey was our travel guide, Deepika. Her remarkable care and attention to detail ensured that every moment was free of discomfort, making this expedition truly special.

Our Keral trip was good, it was a well organised and traveloger team took care of everything so well. However, our trip was during christmas and obviously all the places were crowed and roads were blocked. Also, it was informed to us that the places will be crowed. So, we had no expectations and had good vacation.

Places to visit in Himachal

These are the places Himachal trips are built from. Each trip page lists exactly which of them it covers, and a private trip can swap one for another.

  • Shimla's Ridge and Mall Road: The old summer capital's walking heart: Christ Church on the Ridge, Scandal Point, Lakkar Bazaar for woodwork, and Jakhoo temple on the highest hill.
  • Kufri: The hill above Shimla for pine trails, pony rides and the Himalayan Nature Park, and snow in the winter months.
  • Kullu valley and Manikaran: The road from Shimla to Manali along the Beas, with Pandoh Dam, Kullu's Raghunath Temple and the gurudwara and hot springs at Manikaran.
  • Manali town: Hidimba Devi Temple in its cedar forest, the hot springs at Vashisht, the Tibetan monastery, Van Vihar and Mall Road.
  • Solang Valley: The wide meadow above Manali for paragliding, zorbing, ATV rides and, in winter, skiing and snow, all paid for on the spot.
  • Atal Tunnel and Rohtang Pass: The long road tunnel under the Rohtang ridge to Sissu in Lahaul, and the pass itself for the snow, on a permit and only when it is open.
  • Kasol and the Parvati valley: The riverside village of cafes and craft stalls on the Parvati river, a short drive from Manikaran.
  • Jibhi and Jalori Pass: The quiet Tirthan side of the Kullu valley: Jibhi's waterfall, Chehni Kothi's tower temple, and the forest walk from Jalori Pass to Serolsar Lake.
  • Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: The home of the Tibetan community in exile under the Dhauladhar range: monasteries, Bhagsunath temple and waterfall, Naddi and St John in the Wilderness.
  • Dalhousie and Khajjiar: Dalhousie's colonial churches and Chamera Lake, the deodar forest of Kalatop, and Khajjiar's meadow and small lake ringed by pines.
  • Spiti and Kinnaur: The high cold desert beyond Kinnaur: Chitkul, Nako, Tabo, Key Monastery above Kaza, and Chandratal Lake in summer.

A 6 day Shimla Manali trip, day by day

Every trip is private, so the plan below is a starting point: the days, the hotels and the pace are set around you.

  • Day 1: Delhi to Shimla by road, about 340 km; the evening on Mall Road or in Lakkar Bazaar.
  • Day 2: Jakhoo temple, then Kufri and the Himalayan Nature Park; back for the Ridge, Christ Church and Mall Road.
  • Day 3: Shimla to Manali along the Beas, with Pandoh Dam, Kullu's Raghunath Temple and the hot springs at Manikaran on the way.
  • Day 4: Manali: Hidimba Devi Temple, Vashisht's hot springs, the Tibetan monastery and Mall Road.
  • Day 5: Rohtang Pass when it is open and the permit allows, or Solang Valley for paragliding, zorbing and the snow.
  • Day 6: Manali back to Delhi, a long road journey that reaches Delhi late or the next morning.

Himachal trip cost and what the price covers

Himachal packages start at ₹19,250 per person: ₹19,250 for 6 days. That covers the stays, the local travel, the sightseeing and activities each trip page lists; the journey from your city is quoted with the trip so you can pick the train, bus or flight.

What moves the price is the season, the hotel category, whether the trip uses an overnight coach or a private cab from Delhi, and the group size. May and June and the Christmas to New Year week are the busiest and dearest; the monsoon months cost least. A private trip prices the car and the rooms for your group, so four to six people sharing brings the per-person price down. The journey to the start city, the Rohtang permit, Solang Valley activities, entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Manali with Kasol and Jibhi packages

The backpacking side of the Kullu valley: Manali and Solang, then the Parvati valley for Kasol's cafes and Manikaran's hot springs, and on the longer plan Jibhi and the forest walk from Jalori Pass to Serolsar Lake.

1 trip on this page, from ₹22,499 per person: 6 Days Kullu Manali Kasol Jibhi Adventure (6D/5N, from ₹22,499).

Dharamshala and Dalhousie packages

The western hills: McLeod Ganj's monasteries and Bhagsu waterfall under the Dhauladhar, then Dalhousie, Kalatop and the Khajjiar meadow; reached overnight from Delhi or from Amritsar, and on one plan joined to Manali.

3 trips on this page, from ₹22,499 per person: 6 Days Dharamshala Dalhousie Getaway (6D/5N, from ₹22,499); 6 Days Dalhousie Dharamshala Amritsar Escape (6D/5N, from ₹22,500); 6 Days Dharamshala Dalhousie Honeymoon Retreat (6D/5N, from ₹27,799).

Himachal for friends, couples and families

Couples: 2 plans with the quieter stays and private transfers, from ₹20,299: 6 Days Manali Solang Honeymoon Retreat (6D/5N, from ₹20,299); 6 Days Dharamshala Dalhousie Honeymoon Retreat (6D/5N, from ₹27,799).

Families and couples take the private trips: the same places at your own pace, with the room category and the car chosen for your group.

Best time to visit Himachal and how to reach

Best time

March to June is the main season, with pleasant days and snow still on the high points; mid-September to November is clear and quieter. December to February is for snow in Manali, Kufri and Solang, and July and August are the monsoon, when landslides can slow the hill roads.

  • March to June, 10 to 28°C: The main season: pleasant days, snow still on the high points, and Rohtang usually opening around May. May and June are the busiest weeks in Shimla and Manali.
  • Mid-September to November, 5 to 22°C: Clear skies and crisp air after the rain, with fewer crowds; the best time for views, and the last weeks for Spiti on the Manali side.
  • December to February, -5 to 12°C: Winter: snow usually falls on Manali, Kufri and Solang, roads above Manali can close, and Christmas to New Year is busy. Winter Spiti runs through Shimla and Kinnaur only.
  • July to August, 15 to 25°C: The monsoon: heavy rain on the hill roads, landslides that can hold up a drive for hours, and mist over the views. The valleys are green and the hotels quiet.

What to pack

From March to June, light woollens and a jacket for the evenings, which turn cold in Shimla and Manali even in May. From October to February, thermals, a heavy jacket, gloves and a woollen cap, and waterproof shoes with a good grip if you want the snow at Solang or Kufri. In the monsoon, a rain jacket and quick-dry clothes. Carry sunglasses and sunscreen for the snow points, comfortable walking shoes for Mall Road and the temples, a scarf or cap to cover your head at Manikaran gurudwara, and on the Spiti trips the cold-weather kit and cash the Spiti hub lists.

Getting there

From Hyderabad, fly or take the train to Delhi, where most of our Himachal trips start; a few start in Chandigarh or Amritsar. From Delhi the trip goes on by road, on an overnight AC coach or in a private cab: Shimla is about 340 km, Manali about 530 km and Dharamshala about 480 km. The flight or train to Delhi is not part of the package.

From Bengaluru, fly to Delhi or Chandigarh and join the trip there; most Himachal trips start in Delhi and go on by overnight coach or private cab, and the Chandigarh trips reach Shimla in about three to four hours by road. The flight is booked separately.

From Chennai, fly or take the train to Delhi, the start point for most of our Himachal trips, or fly to Chandigarh or Amritsar for the trips that begin there. From the start city the whole trip is by road into the hills. The journey to the start city is not part of the package.

Permits and fees

Rohtang Pass needs a vehicle permit issued online by the Kullu administration, with a limited number each day. The pass usually opens around May once the snow is cleared and closes on maintenance days, so our trips plan it as an add-on when it is open; the permit and the local vehicle to the snow point are not in the fare. Solang Valley needs no permit. Indian citizens need no Inner Line Permit anywhere in Himachal, Spiti included; foreign nationals need one for the stretch of Kinnaur near the border. The Spiti trips arrange the permits their pages list. Rules change, so confirm before you book.

Himachal compared with Kashmir and Uttarakhand

Himachal or Kashmir? Himachal is the road trip from Delhi: Shimla, Manali, Kasol, Dharamshala and Dalhousie, with an overnight coach or a cab doing the journey, and Spiti or the road to Leh for the longer trips. Kashmir is usually flown into, for the houseboats on Dal Lake in Srinagar and the meadows of Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Kashmir suits a first snow trip or a honeymoon with less time on the road; Himachal suits travellers who enjoy the drive, want a wider spread of budgets, or are after the backpacking routes through Kasol and Jibhi.

Himachal or Uttarakhand? Both are hill states a night's journey from Delhi. Uttarakhand is the pick for Rishikesh, the Char Dham and other pilgrimages, and the lake towns of Nainital and Mussoorie. Himachal has the classic Shimla and Manali circuit, the snow at Solang and Rohtang, the Tibetan quarter of McLeod Ganj and the high desert of Spiti. For a first mountain holiday with snow, Himachal is the usual choice; for a spiritual or river trip, Uttarakhand.
