Ladakh is high desert, and the altitude shapes everything about a trip here — including the first two days, which are largely spent doing very little. Leh sits at around 3,500 metres and the places people come for are higher still: Khardung La on the road north, the dunes and double-humped camels at Hunder in the Nubra valley, and Pangong, whose colour changes hour by hour along a lake that runs on into Tibet. Between them are the monasteries — Thiksey at dawn, Hemis, Diskit's great seated Buddha above the valley. There are two ways in. Flying to Leh is quick and gives you the altitude all at once, which is exactly why the first day is a rest day. Driving in over the Manali or Srinagar roads takes days but earns the height gradually, and is the better trip if you have the time; many of our routes are bike journeys built that way. Trips run five to thirteen days, all private, all built around your dates.
