Places you see on the Ooty and Isha trip
The two halves of the trip, in the order most itineraries run them.
- Adiyogi Shiva statue: The 112-foot steel face at the Isha Yoga Centre, with a light and sound offering most evenings.
- Dhyanalinga: The domed meditation temple at the centre, open to everyone, with no ritual and no admission fee.
- Linga Bhairavi: The temple beside it, with its own evening offering and the Velliangiri hills behind.
- The Nilgiri Mountain Railway: The UNESCO-listed rack railway from Mettupalayam, or the shorter Ooty to Coonoor leg.
- Doddabetta Peak: The highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, clearest before the mid-morning mist.
- Government Botanical Garden and Ooty Lake: The 1848 garden and the boating lake in the middle of Ooty town.
- Coonoor's tea estates: Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and a tea factory, 20 km below Ooty.

Who this trip suits
Solo travellers and friends: the fixed-date departures are mixed groups with a trip captain, from ₹6,999 per person, and rooms are shared by gender. About half of every group travels alone, so joining by yourself is the normal way to do this trip, not the exception.
Couples and families: the centre asks nothing of you beyond modest dress and quiet inside the temples, the Dhyanalinga is free and open to everyone, and the Ooty half is gardens and a train ride. As a private trip the timings fit around the evening offering, which is worth planning the day around.
Best time to go, and getting to Ooty and Isha
Best time
- October to February, 5 to 30°C: Cool in the Nilgiris and pleasant at the centre; Mahashivratri, in February or March, is the biggest night of the year at Isha.
- March to June, 15 to 35°C: Hot down at Coimbatore and comfortable up in Ooty; the flower show fills May.
- July to September, 12 to 30°C: Rain and mist in the hills, the quietest months at the centre, and the lowest prices.
Getting there
Coimbatore is the gateway for both. The Isha Yoga Centre is 30 km west of the city at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, and Ooty is 85 km north, about three hours up the ghat or the toy train from Mettupalayam.

The Nilgiris also run without the centre, and Kodaikanal is the other Tamil Nadu hill station south of Coimbatore.
