- The French Quarter (White Town): Mustard-yellow walls, bougainvillea and street names in two languages; walk it early or by cycle.
- Promenade and Rock Beach: The 1.5 km seafront, closed to traffic in the evening, with the Gandhi statue and the old lighthouse.
- Auroville and the Matrimandir: The international township 12 km north; the Matrimandir viewing point needs a free booking a day ahead.
- Sri Aurobindo Ashram: The main house on Rue de la Marine, open mornings and evenings, silent inside.
- Paradise Beach: Reached by a boat from Chunnambar backwaters; a sandbar beach with shacks, best before noon.

- Arikamedu: The Roman trading post excavation 7 km south, for the ruins and the river.

Pondicherry trip cost and what the price covers
Pondicherry packages start at ₹7,499 per person: ₹7,499 for 3 days. That covers the stays, the local travel, the sightseeing and activities each trip page lists; the journey from your city is quoted with the trip so you can pick the train, bus or flight.
What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.
Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram packages
Mahabalipuram sits halfway back to Chennai: the shore temple, the five rathas and Arjuna's penance, which is why most East Coast Road trips stop there on the way.
1 trip on this page, from ₹10,023 per person: 3 Days Pondicherry Mahabalipuram Bliss from Chennai (3D/2N, from ₹10,023).
Pondicherry and Arunachalam packages
The Arunachaleswarar temple at Tiruvannamalai is two and a half hours inland, and the Girivalam walk around the hill on a full-moon night is what most travellers time the trip for.
1 trip on this page, from ₹7,499 per person: 3 Days Pondicherry Arunachalam Group Trip (3D/2N, from ₹7,499).
Pondicherry for friends, couples and families
Friends and solo travellers: 2 fixed-date group trips from ₹7,499, travel and trip captain included, rooms shared by gender: 3 Days Pondicherry Group Trip from Hyderabad (3D/2N, from ₹7,499); 3 Days Pondicherry Arunachalam Group Trip (3D/2N, from ₹7,499).
Families and couples take the private trips: the same places at your own pace, with the room category and the car chosen for your group.
Best time to visit Pondicherry and how to reach
Best time
October to March is the season, with warm days and cool evenings for the promenade and the cafes. April to June is hot and humid; July to September brings short showers and the lowest rates, and the town is at its quietest.
- November to February, 20 to 30°C: The season: warm days, cool evenings on the Promenade, calm sea.
- March to June, 28 to 38°C: Hot and humid; mornings and evenings outdoors, afternoons in the cafes.
- October to November, 24 to 32°C: The north-east monsoon, a rough sea and the lowest rates of the year.
What to pack
Light cotton and sandals; it is warm and humid all year. Something to cover shoulders for the ashram and the Matrimandir, sunscreen for the beach, and a light rain jacket in October and November.
Getting there
Pondicherry is 160 km from Chennai, three to four hours on the East Coast Road, which is one of the best drives in the south and why the group trips leave Chennai early. Buses run every 30 minutes from Koyambedu.
Pondicherry is about 320 km from Bangalore, six hours by road through Tiruvannamalai, so the fixed-date departures travel overnight on Friday. Trains run to Villupuram, 35 km away, with a short drive on.
Pondicherry is about 800 km from Hyderabad, so the group trips travel by train or overnight bus to Chennai or Villupuram and drive the last stretch on the East Coast Road. A flight to Chennai and a three-hour drive is the fastest route.
Pondicherry or Goa?
Pondicherry or Goa?
Pondicherry is cheaper, and by a clear margin: the beaches are free, the town is walkable or a ₹300-a-day scooter, and a room in White Town costs a fraction of a Goa beach shack in season. Goa has the nightlife, the water sports and far more flights. Pondicherry has the French quarter, Auroville and a coastline you go to for the quiet rather than the party. From Bengaluru or Chennai, Pondicherry is a drive; Goa is a flight or an overnight train.
