The city itself carries the Qutb Shahi and Nizami layers — Charminar with the bangle bazaar packed around it, Golconda fort where a clap at the entrance is heard at the top of the hill, and the tombs nearby — and its food is a destination on its own. Beyond the ring road, the state opens into a landscape of granite outcrops and old temple towns. Bhongir is a single enormous rock with a fort on top, climbable in a morning. Warangal holds the Kakatiya legacy: the thousand-pillar temple and the carved gateways at the fort, with the Ramappa temple further out. Ananthagiri is the hill and forest escape, cool enough to camp in, and Pochampally weaves the ikat that made its name. October to February is comfortable across the state. The rains between June and September bring the Ananthagiri hills and the countryside to life. April and May are hot enough that fort-climbing at Golconda or Bhongir is best done very early or not at all.
