Kashmir questions, answered

How long is the Vaishno Devi trek and are ponies available?
The climb from Katra to the cave shrine is about 13 km each way. You can walk, or hire a pony, palki or electric-vehicle segment from Banganga (paid directly). Battery-car and helicopter options exist for part of the route, subject to availability and separate booking.
What is the best time to do this trip?
The trip runs all year. The Vaishno Devi yatra is busiest during Navratri and the summer holidays, when darshan queues run longest. March to October is pleasant in Srinagar with the Mughal gardens at their best, while December to February is cold with possible snow, so the climb needs proper winter wear. The shrine stays open through winter.
How much walking is involved?
Be ready for one demanding day. The Vaishno Devi darshan is a 13 to 14 km climb each way from Katra, and you can switch to a pony, palki or battery car for most of it, paid directly. The Srinagar day is easy, with short, flat walks in the Mughal gardens and a stairway climb at the Shankaracharya Temple.
What should we pack?
Comfortable walking shoes matter most for the climb, along with a small daypack and water. Even in summer, Srinagar mornings and evenings are cool, so carry a light warm layer; from November to March you need proper winter wear, gloves and a cap. Dress modestly for the shrine and carry a government photo ID for the yatra registration at Katra.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Yes. We can add or drop nights, swap days, upgrade the hotels, add a Dal Lake houseboat night, or extend with a Gulmarg or Pahalgam day trip from Srinagar. Tell your travel consultant what you have in mind and we will rework the plan and the quote.
