The Andamans are a long way out — closer to Myanmar than to the Indian mainland — and the water is the reason to make the trip. Havelock, now Swaraj Dweep, has Radhanagar on its west coast, a wide arc of pale sand that takes the sunset full on, and Elephant Beach for snorkelling over shallow coral. It is also where most of the diving happens; the Andamans are one of the easier places in India to try scuba for the first time, in warm, clear, calm water. Neil Island, now Shaheed Dweep, is smaller and slower again, a cycle-sized place with natural rock bridges at low tide. Port Blair is the arrival point and carries the history: the Cellular Jail, where the sound and light show in the evening is the most affecting thing on the islands. Baratang, north of it, is different once more — mangrove creeks and limestone caves reached by boat. Getting between islands means ferries, and ferries mean weather. Trips run five to nine days, private and planned around your dates.
