Mangalore sits where the Western Ghats stop and the Arabian Sea begins, and that is really the whole appeal of this corner. Drive an hour or two inland and you are in temple country: Kukke Subramanya on the Kumaradhara river, the Manjunatha temple at Dharmasthala with the Bahubali monolith on the hill above it, and the Sharada Peetham at Sringeri, one of the four seats Adi Shankara founded, sitting quietly on the Tunga. Turn north instead and the coast takes over. Udupi has the Sri Krishna temple, seen through a silver window rather than a doorway, and Malpe just beyond it with the ferry out to the basalt columns of St Mary’s Island. Further up, Murudeshwar puts a vast Shiva on a headland over the sea, and Gokarna is a temple town first and a beach town second, with Om Beach reached over a headland and Mirjan Fort standing in green country inland. Our routes here run from three days to nine, because a temple run and a full Karnataka circuit are not the same trip.
