Places to visit in Munnar

These are the places Munnar trips are built from. Each trip page lists exactly which of them it covers, and a private trip can swap one for another.

  • Eravikulam National Park: The home of the Nilgiri tahr, on the grass slopes of Rajamalai about 15 km from town; a park bus takes you up and you walk the last stretch among the tahr. It closes for the calving season, usually February and March, and on heavy-rain days.
  • Top Station: About 32 km out on the Tamil Nadu border, the highest point on the Munnar road at around 1,880 m, with the view down the Kottagudi valley on a clear morning. Go early; the cloud comes in by ten.
  • Mattupetty Dam and lake: Thirteen km from town, a dam lake with speedboats, a Shola forest on its banks and elephants that sometimes come to drink in the evening. The drive out passes the Photo Point tea slopes.
  • Kundala Lake: A few km past Mattupetty, quieter, with pedal boats and a Kashmiri shikara; the cherry trees on the bank blossom in December.
  • Echo Point: A bend on the Mattupetty road where the valley throws your voice back; a ten-minute stop on the way to Top Station.
  • Tea Museum: The KDHP museum at Nallathanni, with the old machinery, a film on the estates and a tasting; closed on Mondays. The working factories nearby do not take visitors.
  • Kolukkumalai: The highest tea estate in the world at about 2,400 m, reached by a rough jeep track from Suryanelli that takes an hour; sunrise from the top, above the clouds, is the best morning in Munnar.
  • Anamudi: The highest peak in India south of the Himalaya at 2,695 m, inside Eravikulam; climbing it needs forest department permission, but it fills the view from the park road.
  • Attukal and Lakkam waterfalls: Attukal is a short walk from Pallivasal on the Kochi side; Lakkam is on the Marayoor road with a pool below it. Both are fullest from July to October.
  • Marayoor and Kanthalloor: Forty km north, the only natural sandalwood forest in Kerala, dolmens from the Iron Age, and Kanthalloor's apple and orange orchards in a drier, Tamil Nadu-facing valley.
  • Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary: Beyond Marayoor on the border, a dry-forest sanctuary with the grizzled giant squirrel, walked with a tribal guide on a permit from the gate.
  • Meesapulimala: The second highest peak here, a day trek through Shola grassland from Rhodo Valley organised by the forest department; the view runs to the Tamil Nadu plains.
  • Pothamedu viewpoint: Five km from town on the Kochi road, the easiest tea-estate view in Munnar and the usual sunset stop.

Opening hours and tickets

Eravikulam sells tickets at the gate from about 7.30 am and the park bus stops in the early afternoon, so go in the morning; the park closes for calving, usually February and March. The Tea Museum opens about 9 am to 5 pm and is closed on Mondays. Mattupetty boating runs through the day and Kolukkumalai jeeps leave Suryanelli before dawn for sunrise. Top Station and the lakes are on one road out of town, so they are done as one half-day.

What to eat

Kerala food with a Tamil edge, because the estate workers came from Tamil Nadu: appam and stew or puttu and kadala for breakfast, a sadya on a banana leaf at lunch, Kerala parotta with beef fry in the town's small hotels, and tea from the estate you slept on. The resorts serve their own dinners, which matters because the town is 20 minutes away and closes early. Carrot halwa and homemade chocolate from the shops on the main road are the things to take home.

A 3 day Munnar trip from Kochi, day by day

A private trip runs the same plan at your own pace; a group departure follows it to the minute.

  • Day 1: the car meets you at Kochi airport and climbs through Kothamangalam and Adimali, with Cheeyappara falls on the way; Pothamedu for the first view of the tea and the Tea Museum before checking in above the town.
  • Day 2: Eravikulam early for the tahr, back through the estates for lunch, then Mattupetty dam, Echo Point and Kundala lake in the afternoon and Top Station if the cloud holds off.
  • Day 3: Kolukkumalai by jeep before dawn for sunrise above the clouds, breakfast at the estate, and the drive down to Kochi for an evening flight or a night in Fort Kochi.

Munnar trip cost and what the price covers

Munnar packages start at ₹12,250 per person: ₹12,250 for 4 days. That covers the stays, the local travel, the sightseeing and activities each trip page lists; the journey from your city is quoted with the trip so you can pick the train, bus or flight.

What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

  • October to March, 10 to 25°C: The season: clear mornings, the estates greenest in October and November, cold nights from December. Christmas to New Year and long weekends are the dearest weeks.
  • April and May, 15 to 25°C: Pleasant in the hills while the coast is hot, which is why summer holidays fill Munnar. Afternoon showers begin in May.
  • June to September, 12 to 20°C: The monsoon: heavy rain, mist on the estates, waterfalls at their fullest and room rates at their lowest. Eravikulam may be shut and the ghat road slow.

What to pack

A fleece or light jacket for every month and a proper warm layer from December to February, when the estates touch freezing at night. Walking shoes for Eravikulam and the waterfalls, a raincoat rather than an umbrella in the monsoon, and sunscreen: the sun is strong at altitude even when it feels cool. Motion-sickness tablets for the ghat road if you need them.

Getting there

From Hyderabad, fly to Kochi (90 minutes, several flights a day on IndiGo and Air India) and drive up: Munnar is about 130 km and four hours from the airport, the last two on ghat road through the estates. The overnight Sabari Express to Ernakulam takes about 20 hours and is the budget option. Every trip starts at the airport or station with a car and driver.

From Bengaluru, Munnar is about 480 km by road, ten to eleven hours through Salem and Coimbatore or Salem and Pollachi, so the practical route is the 70-minute flight to Kochi and a four-hour drive, or the overnight train to Ernakulam. Driving works as a two-day road trip with a night in Coimbatore or Pollachi.

From Chennai, Kochi is a 75-minute flight and Munnar four hours from the airport; the overnight Chennai to Ernakulam trains take about 12 hours. By road it is about 580 km through Salem and Coimbatore, best split with a night stop. Coimbatore airport is an alternative at about 160 km from Munnar through Pollachi and Chinnar.

Munnar compared with Ooty, Wayanad and Coorg

Munnar or Ooty? Munnar is greener, warmer and quieter: tea to the horizon, almost no town, 15 to 25°C. Ooty is colder, has the toy train, the botanical garden and the lake, and sights closer together, and it is the easier trip from Bengaluru or Hyderabad. Pick Munnar for the estates and the silence; Ooty for a family that wants things to do.

Munnar or Wayanad? Munnar is tea and views; Wayanad is forest and rock, with Edakkal, the Chembra climb, Banasura Sagar and a safari at Muthanga, warmer in the valleys and much closer to Bengaluru by road. Wayanad has more to do; Munnar is the prettier drive.

Munnar or Coorg? Coorg is coffee at 1,000 m and five hours from Bengaluru; Munnar is tea at 1,600 m and four hours from Kochi. Coorg is the weekend; Munnar is the start of a Kerala week that carries on to the backwaters and the beaches.
