  • Travel: Every trip starts with a pick-up wherever you are coming from; the trip pages say what the journey covers.
  • Stay: a heritage hotel near the palace or a garden resort on the Bengaluru road.

Places to visit in Mysore

Every trip on this page covers the places below; a private trip can drop one and add another.

  • Mysore Palace: The Wadiyar palace of 1912; go for the 7 pm Sunday and public-holiday illumination, 97,000 bulbs for 45 minutes.
  • Chamundi Hill and the Nandi: 1,000 steps or a road to the Chamundeshwari temple, with the monolithic Nandi on the way down.
  • Brindavan Gardens: The terraced gardens below the KRS dam, 19 km out, with the musical fountain after dark.
  • St Philomena's Cathedral: A neo-Gothic church modelled on Cologne, with twin 175-foot spires.
  • Devaraja Market: The old produce market for flowers, bananas, sandalwood oil and incense.
  • Srirangapatna: Tipu Sultan's island fort 16 km out: Daria Daulat Bagh, the Gumbaz and the Ranganathaswamy temple.
  • Mysore Zoo: One of the oldest and best-kept zoos in India, open every day except Tuesday.
  • Somnathpur: The Chennakesava temple 35 km east, the most complete Hoysala temple standing.

Opening hours and tickets

Mysore Palace is open 10 am to 5.30 pm every day; the illumination runs 7 to 7.45 pm on Sundays, public holidays and through Dasara. The Chamundeshwari temple on the hill opens around 7.30 am, with a long midday break. Brindavan Gardens open in the afternoon and the musical fountain runs at dusk, about 7 pm on weekdays and 7.30 pm at weekends. Mysore Zoo is open 8.30 am to 5.30 pm and closed on Tuesdays. Srirangapatna's Daria Daulat Bagh and the Gumbaz close by 5.30 pm. Tickets are modest at each — the palace is the dearest, and shoes come off inside it. Timings shift for festivals, so a trip captain checks them the week you travel.

What to eat

Mysuru is a breakfast city. The masala dosa was invented an hour up the road and the local version is the butter-heavy Mylari dosa, eaten at the old Mylari shops near Lakshmipuram. Mysore pak, made with gram flour and ghee, comes from the palace kitchen and is still sold on Sayyaji Rao Road. Add a set dosa, ragi mudde with a country-chicken curry for lunch, and filter coffee anywhere. Devaraja market is the place for the sandalwood, jaggery and banana leaves rather than a meal.

A 2 day Mysore trip, day by day

A private trip runs the same plan at your own pace; a group departure follows it to the minute.

  • Day 1: the palace in the morning, Devaraja market and St Philomena's, Chamundi hill in the afternoon, and Brindavan gardens for the fountain show.
  • Day 2: Srirangapatna and Somnathpur, the zoo or the sandalwood factory, and the drive back after lunch.

Mysore trip cost and what the price covers

Mysore packages start at ₹10,900 per person: ₹10,900 for 4 days. That covers the stays, the local travel, the sightseeing and activities each trip page lists; the journey from your city is quoted with the trip so you can pick the train, bus or flight.

What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Mysore for friends, couples and families

Families and couples take the private trips: the same places at your own pace, with the room category and the car chosen for your group.

Best time to visit Mysore and how to reach

Best time

October to February is the pleasant season, and Dasara in September or October is the city at its biggest, with the palace illuminated every evening and the Jamboo Savari procession. March to May is hot by day but the palace and the market are morning outings anyway; the monsoon is light and keeps the gardens green.

  • October to February, 16 to 29°C: The pleasant season, and Dasara in September or October is the city at its grandest and busiest.
  • March to May, 20 to 34°C: Hot by afternoon; the palace and the market are morning outings.
  • June to September, 19 to 28°C: A light monsoon that keeps Brindavan gardens green; short showers rather than washouts.

What to pack

Cotton clothes and a hat: Mysuru is warm most of the year. Something covering shoulders and knees for the temples, comfortable shoes for the palace, which is walked barefoot inside, and a light layer for December evenings.

Getting there

Mysuru is 145 km from Bangalore, three hours on the ten-lane expressway, which is why it works as a day trip and why the group departures leave early on Saturday. The Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains take two hours.

Mysuru is about 750 km from Hyderabad, an overnight journey of 12 to 13 hours by road, so the group trips travel on Friday night. By train, most services from Hyderabad run to Mysuru Junction through Bengaluru, and the Bengaluru to Mysuru leg alone takes two hours on the Shatabdi or the Vande Bharat. The fastest way is a flight to Bengaluru and a three-hour drive on the ten-lane expressway.

Chennai to Mysuru is about 480 km, eight hours by road, or the overnight train to Mysuru Junction. A flight to Bengaluru and a three-hour drive is the quickest option.

4 days in Mysore: what travellers ask

October to March is pleasant. If you can, come during Dasara — usually September or October — when the palace, the procession and the whole city are the event, though it needs booking far ahead. April and May are hot.

From people just like you

During this memorable trip, it wasn't merely a voyage but an enriching adventure shared with dear friends and family. The experience proved to be exceptionally comfortable, justifying every penny spent. Opting for this option was a decision I would have regretted not making, given the unparalleled comfort and joy it brought. A pivotal factor in this delightful journey was our travel guide, Deepika. Her remarkable care and attention to detail ensured that every moment was free of discomfort, making this expedition truly special.

Our Keral trip was good, it was a well organised and traveloger team took care of everything so well. However, our trip was during christmas and obviously all the places were crowed and roads were blocked. Also, it was informed to us that the places will be crowed. So, we had no expectations and had good vacation.
