Day-wise plan

Every day runs on a private cab - the order and pace are yours to change.

1Day 1 - Trip begins at Cochin - Temple Day
  • Met at Cochin, you drive north to Guruvayoor, one of the most visited Krishna temples in India.
  • Note that entry is restricted to Hindus and the dress code is strict — men in a mundu without a shirt, women in a saree or salwar.
  • Overnight at Guruvayoor; hotel breakfast is included each morning.
2Day 2 - Drive to Hills
  • Return towards Cochin and take the road up to Munnar, stopping at the Athirapally waterfalls on the Chalakudy river.
  • Continue the climb into the tea country and check in at Munnar.
  • Overnight in the hills.
3Day 3 - Munnar Sightseeing
  • A full Munnar day: Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point, then the tea estates.
  • Carry on to Eravikulam National Park, where the Nilgiri tahr live on the slopes above town.
  • Second night in Munnar.
4Day 4 - Munnar to Thekkady
  • Drive to Thekkady, from tea into spice and forest.
  • Take the Periyar safari, visit Elephant Junction, and watch a Kalaripayattu performance in the evening.
  • Overnight at Thekkady.
5Day 5 - Backwater Cruise
  • Down from Thekkady to Alleppey and aboard the houseboat around midday, with lunch served as you leave the jetty.
  • Cruise the Vembanad canals and moor overnight; all meals on the boat are included.
6Day 6 - Trip ends at Cochin - Beaches & Departure
  • A sunrise cruise before you disembark.
  • On to Marari Beach for the last of the coast, then transfer to Cochin for your departure.

Kerala questions, answered

Not travelling from Cochin? Can I still join?
Yes. The plan starts at Cochin and you can reach it from any Indian city. Kochi, Trivandrum and Calicut all have airports, and the trains along the coast are frequent. Your travel up to the start point is not part of the price, and we will help you pick the right arrival time.
Is this a group departure or a private trip?
This is a private trip. Your own car and driver, your own dates and your own pace, with only your group on board. The houseboat is booked for your party alone unless you ask us for a shared one.
How does the houseboat night work?
Boats board around midday and moor for the night by early evening, since cruising after dark is not permitted on the backwaters. Lunch, dinner and next-day breakfast are cooked on board, and the boat is yours alone with its own crew.
What is the Periyar boat safari like?
It is a shared government boat on the lake at Thekkady, roughly ninety minutes, and tickets are sold on the day rather than booked ahead. Early morning is the best slot for wildlife. Sightings of elephant and bison are common, tiger effectively never.
When is the best time to visit Kerala?
September to March is the comfortable window, dry and green after the rains. April and May are hot and humid on the coast though fine in the hills. June to August is the south west monsoon, which is beautiful and cheap but wet, and the season for Ayurveda.
Can the itinerary be changed?
Yes. Nights can be shifted between the hills and the coast, the houseboat upgraded to a premium boat, and beach days added at the end. Send an enquiry with your dates and group size and we will build the exact plan and price for you.
