Places you see on the Munnar and Alleppey trip

The two halves of the trip, in the order most itineraries run them.

  • The Munnar tea estates and the Tea Museum: Rolling tea gardens on every side of the town, and the museum that shows how the leaf is processed.
  • Eravikulam National Park: The grassland home of the Nilgiri tahr above Munnar; it usually closes for a few weeks around February and March for the calving season.
  • Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point: The lake and dam on the Top Station road, with boating and the echoing lakeside viewpoint.
  • Top Station: The viewpoint at the Tamil Nadu border looking down over the plains, best in the clear morning hours.
  • Kolukkumalai sunrise: A jeep ride up to one of the highest tea estates for the sunrise above the clouds, on the group trips.
  • Thekkady and Periyar: The spice plantations and the Periyar lake and tiger reserve, the usual stop between the hills and the backwaters.
  • The Alleppey houseboat: A day and a night on the backwaters of Vembanad lake and the Kuttanad paddy country, with Kerala lunch and dinner served on board.
  • Alappuzha and Marari beaches: The old pier at Alappuzha beach and the quieter fishing-village sands of Marari, a short drive away.
  • Varkala: The red laterite cliff above the beach, with the cliff-top walk and cafes, on the plans that continue south.

Who this trip suits

Solo travellers and friends: the fixed-date departures are mixed groups with a trip captain, from ₹10,999 per person, and rooms are shared by gender. About half of every group travels alone, so joining by yourself is the normal way to do this trip, not the exception.

Couples and families: every plan runs privately with your own car and driver, and the houseboat is a private boat for your group with a bedroom per couple. The ghat road to Munnar has hairpin bends, worth knowing if anyone gets car sick; the backwater day is the easiest part of the trip for children and grandparents.

Best time to go, and getting to Munnar and Alleppey

Best time

  • September to March, 15 to 32°C: The best window for both halves: cool, misty mornings in Munnar and calm, dry days on the backwaters. December and January are the busiest weeks.
  • April and May, 18 to 35°C: Pleasant in the hills, hot and humid on the backwaters; a quieter time with lower houseboat prices.
  • June to August, 17 to 30°C: The monsoon: heavy rain, full waterfalls, green hills and the lowest prices. The Nehru Trophy snake-boat race on Punnamada lake is held in August.

Getting there

Kochi is the gateway: its airport has flights from every big city and Ernakulam is on the main rail lines. Munnar is about 110 km and three and a half to four hours by road from Kochi airport, Alleppey about 170 km and four and a half to five hours from Munnar, and Kochi about an hour and a half from Alleppey. Neither Munnar nor Alleppey has an airport, so every plan here includes the drives.
