Day-wise plan

Meals and stay listed on every day · pace built for a group.

1Day 1 · Day 01: The Vizag coast: Kailasagiri, Rushikonda and the beach road. · Meals: ·
  • Arrive in Visakhapatnam, meet your trip captain and check in.
  • Up to Kailasagiri on the hilltop, for the Shiva and Parvati statues and the view down over the bay.
  • On to Rushikonda Beach, the cleanest stretch of sand on this coast.
  • The evening along RK Beach, with the lit-up promenade and the sea on one side the whole way.
  • Overnight in Visakhapatnam.
2Day 2 · Day 02: Up the ghats: Borra Caves, Katiki Waterfalls and Chaparai. · Meals: ·
  • Breakfast, then start the climb into the Eastern Ghats towards Araku, about three and a half hours through tunnels and hairpin bends.
  • Stop at the Borra Caves, a million-year-old limestone system lit up deep underground.
  • Walk the last stretch to Katiki Waterfalls, roughly a kilometre over rock from the road.
  • On to Chaparai, where the water runs flat over bare stone and you can sit straight in it.
  • Cross the Wooden Bridge on the way in, a favourite stop for a photo.
  • Check in at Araku and stay the night up in the hills, where it gets properly cold after dark.
3Day 3 · Day 03: The Pinery, the coffee country, and back down to the coast. · Meals: ·
  • Breakfast and check out.
  • A slow morning through the Pinery, the pine stretch on the edge of the valley.
  • Time among the coffee slopes and the tribal museum before the descent.
  • Worth trying: the bamboo chicken, cooked in a hollow bamboo over an open fire, which is a valley speciality.
  • Drive back down to Visakhapatnam for your onward journey home.

Is this a group departure or a private trip?
This is a community group departure. You travel with a small batch of other travellers, with a Travloger trip captain along for the whole trip. Rooms are always separate for men and women. If you would rather have a private room or a private vehicle, tell us and we will quote it separately.
What if the batch does not fill up?
A departure runs once at least 12 travellers have booked. If a batch does not reach that number we will offer you a private plan at the difference in cost, or move you to another date, or refund your advance in full. You will always hear from us well before the departure.
How does the room sharing work?
Rooms are on a sharing basis and are always separate for men and women. Couples travelling together, or anyone who wants a private room, should tell us at the time of booking; a private room costs extra and depends on what the property has free.
How is the drive up to Araku?
It is about 115 km from Vizag and takes roughly three and a half hours, climbing the Eastern Ghats through tunnels and hairpins. It is one of the prettiest road stretches in the state, but the bends are constant, so if you get car sick take something before you set off and sit forward in the vehicle.
When is the best time to go?
October to February is the comfortable window, when the hills are green and the mornings are cold enough for a jacket. The monsoon between June and September makes the waterfalls at Katiki and Chaparai far more dramatic, but the trails to them get slippery and the ghat road slows down.
What is the walk to Katiki Waterfalls like?
You leave the vehicle at Borra and cover the last stretch on foot, about a kilometre over uneven rock and, in the wet months, mud. It is short but not smooth, so wear shoes with grip rather than sandals.
