• Araku Valley: The coffee valley at about 900 m in the Eastern Ghats, about three hours up the ghat road from Vizag: the Tribal and Coffee museums, Padmapuram Gardens, the Galikonda viewpoint and the Chaparai cascade.
• Borra Caves: Limestone caves lit up deep inside the hill, on the road up to Araku; the jeep ride to the Katiki falls nearby is an option paid on the spot.
• Vanjangi: The hilltop near Paderu where the valleys fill with cloud below you on clear winter mornings; it needs a pre-dawn start and a jeep for the last stretch.
• Lambasingi: The village in the Chintapalli hills often called the Kashmir of Andhra, where December and January mornings can fall close to freezing, with the Thajangi reservoir nearby.
• RK Beach and the submarine museum: Vizag's seafront promenade, with the INS Kursura, a real submarine you walk through, and the TU-142 aircraft museum beside it.
• Kailasagiri: The hilltop park above Vizag with the giant Shiva and Parvati statues, a ropeway and the bay below.
• Rushikonda, Yarada and the Dolphin's Nose: The swimming beach north of the city, and the quieter hill-ringed beach beyond the Dolphin's Nose headland and its lighthouse to the south.
• Simhachalam Temple: The hill temple of Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha on the edge of Vizag, its deity covered in sandalwood paste through the year.
• Annavaram: The Satyanarayana Swamy temple on Ratnagiri hill, about 120 km south of Vizag, one of the most visited temples in the state.
• Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala: The hill temple of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) above Tirupati, about 140 km from Chennai; darshan is by a slot booked through TTD, and queues can run for hours on weekends and festival days.
• Srikalahasti and the Padmavathi Temple: The Shiva temple near Tirupati that is the air shrine of the five Pancha Bhoota temples, and Goddess Padmavathi's temple at Tiruchanur, both on most Tirupati plans.
• Puri and Konark, Odisha: Across the border to the north: the Jagannath temple and the beach at Puri, and the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Chilika lake on the way from Vizag.

Every trip is private, so the plan below is a starting point: the days, the hotels and the pace are set around you.

• Day 1: leave Vizag around 7 am for the ghat road, the Borra caves and the Galikonda viewpoint, then Araku's Padmapuram Gardens, Tribal Museum and Chaparai cascade, and on to Vanjangi for the night.
• Day 2: up before dawn for the Vanjangi sea of clouds, the last stretch by jeep, then the Kothapalli waterfalls and across the hills to Lambasingi for the night.
• Day 3: the Lambasingi sunrise viewpoint and the Thajangi reservoir, then the drive back to Vizag by the afternoon.

Andhra Pradesh packages start at ₹10,499 per person: ₹10,499 for 2 days, ₹10,999 for 3 days, ₹11,499 for 4 days and ₹12,999 for 5 days. That covers the pick-up and drop in Vizag (within city limits) or Chennai, a private AC sedan or SUV with a driver for the whole route with fuel, tolls and parking, the hotel nights and the sightseeing each trip page lists; the honeymoon plans add room decor and one candlelight dinner. Meals are not included on any trip, and neither are entry fees, the jeep rides to the Katiki falls and the Vanjangi viewpoint, boating and the zipline at Thajangi, boating on Chilika, or darshan tickets and laddu tokens at Tirumala. The train, bus or flight to Vizag or Chennai is yours to book.

What moves the price is the season, the stay category (3-star Standard or 4-star Deluxe, or the resorts and camp-stays at Vanjangi and Lambasingi), the car (a sedan or an SUV) and how many of you share it, since a private trip prices the car and the rooms for your group. October to February is the busiest and dearest time in the Araku hills, and the December and January weekends at Vanjangi and Lambasingi fill first; at Tirupati, weekends, school holidays and the big festival days cost more. Meals, entry fees, jeep rides, boating, darshan tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, and 5% GST is added to the price shown.

Best time

October to February is the season: cool, clear mornings in the Araku hills, the best months for the Vanjangi cloud sea and Lambasingi's cold from about November to January, and comfortable days on the Vizag coast and in Tirupati. March to June is hot on the coast and very hot in Tirupati, though the hills stay cooler; July to September is the monsoon, when the ghats are green and the waterfalls full but mist can hide the sunrise views. Tirumala is open and busy all year.

• October to February, 10 to 30°C: The season: cool, clear mornings in the Araku hills, the best months for the Vanjangi cloud sea and Lambasingi's cold from about November to January, and comfortable days on the coast and in Tirupati. Christmas, New Year and the Sankranti weekend in January are the busiest.
• March to June, 20 to 40°C: Hot and humid on the Vizag coast and very hot in Tirupati, so sightseeing moves to the mornings and evenings; the hills stay cooler than the coast. The April and May school holidays are among the busiest weeks at Tirumala.
• July to September, 20 to 33°C: The monsoon: the ghats are green and the waterfalls full, but mist can hide the Vanjangi and Lambasingi sunrises, the hill roads get slippery and the sea at Vizag is rough.

What to pack

A warm jacket, a cap and a layer underneath for the Vanjangi and Lambasingi sunrises from November to February, when dawn is near freezing, and light cotton for the coast and Tirupati. Shoes with a good grip for the damp floors of the Borra caves and the walk to the Katiki falls, a torch, sunscreen and a hat, and an umbrella or rain jacket from June to September. For Tirumala, traditional clothes for darshan (a dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, a saree or churidar for women) and slip-on footwear; modest clothing for Simhachalam, Annavaram and Puri; and a government photo ID.

Getting there

Every trip here is private and starts in Vizag or Chennai, so the journey from Hyderabad is not part of the package. For Araku, Vanjangi, Lambasingi and the coast, take the overnight train to Visakhapatnam, about 12 hours, or a flight of a little over an hour; by road Vizag is about 620 km. For the Tirupati temple trips, which pick up in Chennai, fly or take an overnight train to Chennai. Tirupati itself is about 560 km from Hyderabad, with overnight trains and flights into Tirupati airport at Renigunta; if you would rather start there, ask the planner whether the plan can begin in Tirupati.

From Bengaluru, Vizag is about a 90-minute flight or a train of about 18 hours, and the Araku, Vanjangi and coast trips pick you up there. Tirupati is about 250 km, five to six hours by road, but our Tirupati trips start and end in Chennai, about 350 km from Bengaluru by train, bus or a short flight, which is not part of the package; if Tirupati is the easier start for you, ask the planner whether the plan can begin there.

The Tirupati temple trips start and end in Chennai, in a private AC sedan or SUV with a driver: most pick you up at night so you reach Tirupati, about 140 km and three to four hours away, by morning. For Araku, Vanjangi and the Vizag coast, Vizag is about 800 km up the coast, roughly 12 hours by train or a flight of about 80 minutes, and the trip picks you up there.

Permits and fees

No permit is needed for any trip on this page. Darshan at Tirumala is not part of the Tirupati packages: the trip pages say "TTD darshan booked separately", so book your slot on the temple trust's official portal (ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in) in each pilgrim's name with a photo ID before you fix the trip, and confirm the current rules there.

Andhra Pradesh or Ooty? Ooty is the bigger, busier hill station: about 2,200 m up in the Nilgiris, with the toy train, the botanical gardens and the lake, and colder nights. Araku is lower, at about 900 m, and quieter: coffee estates, tribal villages, the Borra caves and the sunrise at Vanjangi or Lambasingi, three hours from the Vizag coast. From Hyderabad or Vizag, Araku is the nearer trip; from Bengaluru or Chennai, Ooty usually is.
