Both are Kerala hill country and both get recommended in the same breath, which hides how different the two weeks are.
The short answer
Munnar if you want the view — tea slopes to the horizon, cool air, very little to organise. Wayanad if you want something to do each morning, and if you are coming from Bengaluru or Hyderabad, where it is by far the shorter journey.
What each one is
Munnar sits at about 1,600 m and is essentially tea: estates over every slope, Eravikulam National Park above it, Top Station on the Tamil Nadu border for the view down. The town itself is small and not the reason anyone goes. Temperatures run 15 to 25°C, which is pleasant rather than cold.
Wayanad spans 700 to 2,100 m, so it is warmer in the valleys and cool only on the high estates, and what fills the days is not scenery but specific places. The Edakkal caves hold Neolithic carvings four to eight thousand years old, up a 1.5 km climb from Ambalavayal, closed on Mondays. Chembra Peak has the heart-shaped lake on the way up, and needs a forest permit and an early start. Banasura Sagar is the largest earth dam in India, with speedboats on the reservoir. Soochipara is a three-tier fall with a pool at the bottom, and Muthanga runs dawn and afternoon jeep safaris for elephant and gaur on the Bandipur side.
The journey, which usually decides it
From Bengaluru, Wayanad is about 260 km and five and a half hours through Mysuru and the Western Ghats. One thing to plan around: the Bandipur forest road is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am. From Hyderabad it is an overnight road journey of 14 to 15 hours. Kozhikode — still called Calicut — is the nearest airport and railhead, about 100 km away and two hours up the Thamarassery ghat and its nine hairpin bends.
Munnar is reached through Kochi, roughly 130 km and four hours. From Karnataka or Telangana that is a flight plus a half-day drive, which is why Munnar tends to appear inside a longer Kerala circuit rather than as a weekend.
Which suits whom
Munnar suits couples, a slow four days, and anyone whose idea of a hill station is a balcony and a view. Wayanad suits friends, families with older children, and anyone who would rather climb something. The Edakkal climb and the Chembra trek are both real efforts — worth planning around if you are travelling with very young children or elderly parents, though Banasura Sagar, the falls and the safari ask nothing of anyone.
The monsoon warning
Wayanad gets one of the wettest monsoons in Kerala from June to September. The falls are at their best and prices at their lowest, but Chembra and Kuruva island usually close. Munnar takes the same rain with less disruption, because looking at tea in the mist still works.
