How to reach Bhongir Fort from Hyderabad
By road: take the Warangal highway out through Uppal and Ghatkesar. It is about 50 km, and 1.5 to 2 hours depending on how quickly you clear the city.
By train: Bhongir station is on the Secunderabad to Kazipet line, and local and express trains from Secunderabad take about an hour. An auto from the station covers the short distance to the fort.
By bus: buses on the Hyderabad to Warangal and Yadagirigutta routes stop in Bhongir town.
The climb and the view from the top
The steps are carved straight into the rock and are steep in places, so take it slowly in the sun. At the top are the remains of the fort's walls, gateways and water tanks, with an open view over the plains and the town below. There are no shops once you start climbing, so carry water with you.
Rock climbing at Bhongir
The same rock is Telangana's best-known climbing crag. Telangana Tourism runs a Rock Climbing School here with Transcend Adventures, with beginner courses in climbing, rappelling and bouldering. Malavath Poorna, the youngest girl to summit Everest, trained at Bhongir. Book a course ahead rather than expecting to join on the day.
A short history
The fort dates to the 10th century and was first called Tribhuvanagiri. It is credited to the Western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI, and was held in turn by the Kakatiyas, the Bahmani Sultans from the 15th century and later the Nizams. Over time the name softened to Bhuvanagiri, and then to Bhongir.
Tips for the visit
- Start at opening time; from March to June the rock is hot by late morning.
- Wear shoes with grip, not sandals, as the carved steps are worn smooth in places.
- Carry at least a litre of water per person and a cap.
- Avoid the climb after heavy rain, when the rock surface turns slippery.
