Places to visit in Kerala

These are the places Kerala trips are built from. Each trip page lists exactly which of them it covers, and a private trip can swap one for another.

  • Munnar: Tea estates at 1,600 m, Eravikulam and the Nilgiri tahr, Mattupetty and Top Station; two nights on almost every Kerala trip and the honeymoon half of most of them.
  • Alleppey backwaters: The houseboat night: board at noon at Punnamada, cruise the Vembanad lake and the canals past paddy fields and churches, moor at sunset, and step off after breakfast. The one thing every Kerala trip is planned around.
  • Thekkady and Periyar: The Periyar lake boat through the tiger reserve, elephants on the bank if you are early, a spice-garden walk and a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu show in the evening; the middle night of the classic circuit.
  • Fort Kochi: The Chinese fishing nets, St Francis church, Mattancherry Palace and the Jew Town spice warehouses, walkable in an afternoon at the start or end of the trip.
  • Varkala: A red cliff above a long beach with cafes along its top, the Janardanaswamy temple and a calmer sea than Kovalam; the beach most couples choose.
  • Kovalam: Three crescent beaches below a lighthouse, 15 km from Thiruvananthapuram airport, with the most resorts on the coast and the easiest flight home.
  • Kumarakom: The quieter side of the Vembanad lake, with the bird sanctuary, lakeside resorts and the same houseboats as Alleppey from a less crowded jetty.
  • Athirappilly Falls: The largest waterfall in Kerala, 80 m wide in the monsoon, an hour off the Kochi to Munnar road; fullest from July to October.
  • Wayanad: Edakkal caves, Banasura Sagar, Chembra peak and Muthanga safaris in the north, six hours from Bengaluru by road; the Kerala that works as a road trip.
  • Guruvayur: The Krishna temple near Thrissur, one of the most visited in Kerala, with the elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta beside it; on the temple yatras.
  • Marari beach: A fishing village beach 15 km from Alleppey with a handful of resorts and no cliff, cafes or crowd; the quiet alternative for the night after the houseboat.
  • Bekal Fort: The largest fort in Kerala, on the sea in the far north near Kasaragod, with a beach below and the film-famous rampart; a stop on a Mangalore or Kasaragod route rather than the classic circuit.

Opening hours and tickets

Houseboats board at noon and return by 9 am the next morning, which is why the Alleppey day is planned around lunch on board. The Periyar lake boat runs in fixed slots from early morning to mid-afternoon and the first boat is the one for wildlife; tickets are sold by the forest department and sell out in season. Eravikulam at Munnar closes for calving, usually February and March. Mattancherry Palace is closed on Fridays and the Fort Kochi Chinese nets are worked in the early morning and at sunset.

What to eat

Appam with stew or puttu and kadala for breakfast, a sadya on a banana leaf at lunch, Kerala parotta with beef fry, karimeen pollichathu on the houseboat, Malabar biryani in the north and toddy-shop fish curry near Alleppey. The houseboat crew cooks every meal on board; resorts in Munnar and Thekkady serve dinner because the towns close early. Banana chips, Munnar tea and spices from Thekkady are the things to carry home.

A 5 day Kerala trip, day by day

A private trip runs the same plan at your own pace; a group departure follows it to the minute.

  • Day 1: land at Kochi and drive up to Munnar, about four hours, with Cheeyappara falls on the way; Pothamedu for the first view of the tea before checking in above the town.
  • Day 2: Eravikulam early for the Nilgiri tahr, then Mattupetty dam, Echo Point, Kundala lake and Top Station if the cloud holds off; the Tea Museum on the way back.
  • Day 3: drive to Thekkady, a spice-plantation walk and a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in the evening.
  • Day 4: the Periyar lake boat early, then down to Alleppey to board the houseboat at noon; the night on the backwaters.
  • Day 5: breakfast on board, off the houseboat by nine, Fort Kochi's fishing nets on the way, and the flight home from Kochi.

Kerala trip cost and what the price covers

Kerala packages start at ₹21,500 per person: ₹21,500 for 7 days. That covers the stays, the local travel, the sightseeing and activities each trip page lists; the journey from your city is quoted with the trip so you can pick the train, bus or flight.

What moves the price is the room category, the season and the group size. Weekends, long weekends and the December fortnight cost more than a mid-week date, and a group of four to six brings the per-person price down because the car and the rooms are shared. Entry tickets and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey packages

Varkala and Kovalam beach packages

Varkala's cliff and Kovalam's lighthouse beach are two hours south of Alleppey, so a six or seven day trip finishes on the sea and flies home from Thiruvananthapuram instead of driving back to Kochi.

Best time to visit Kerala and how to reach

Best time

September to March. September to November is the best value, with the hills at their greenest after the monsoon; December to February is the peak, cool in Munnar and beach season on the coast. June to August is the monsoon, half the price and the Ayurveda season; April and May are hot on the coast and pleasant in the hills.

  • October to February, 22 to 32°C coast, 10 to 22°C hills: The season: dry days on the coast, cool nights in Munnar, calm backwaters. December to February is the peak and the Christmas fortnight books out months ahead.
  • March to May, 26 to 36°C coast, 15 to 25°C hills: Hot and humid on the coast, pleasant in Munnar and Thekkady, which is why summer trips go to the hills first. Thrissur Pooram falls in April or May.
  • June to September, 24 to 30°C: The monsoon: green, wet and half the price, Athirappilly at its fullest and the Ayurveda season. The houseboats run; the beaches are for walking, not swimming. Onam is at the end of it.

What to pack

Cotton for the coast and a light jacket for Munnar and Thekkady, where evenings drop to 10°C in winter. Walking shoes for Eravikulam and the spice walk, sandals for the houseboat and the beach, a raincoat in the monsoon, and mosquito repellent for the backwater night. Temples ask for a mundu or saree and men enter Guruvayur bare-chested; carry a change of clothes for the boat.

Getting there

From Hyderabad the trip starts with a 90-minute flight to Kochi, several a day on IndiGo and Air India, or the overnight Sabari Express to Ernakulam, about 20 hours. A Wayanad-first trip flies to Kozhikode instead. Every trip starts at the airport or station with a car and driver.

From Bengaluru, Kochi is a 70-minute flight or an overnight train of about 12 hours, and Wayanad is a six-hour drive through Mysuru, the one part of Kerala that works as a road trip from the city. Munnar by road is about 480 km, better done with a night stop or by flying to Kochi.

From Chennai, Kochi is a 75-minute flight or an overnight train of about 12 hours; Thiruvananthapuram has its own flights and trains for a trip that ends at Kovalam. The 700 km drive is not worth it with those options.

Kerala compared with Goa and Coorg

Kerala or Goa? Goa is one beach after another with the nightlife in between; Kerala is a route: hills, wildlife, a houseboat night and then the beach, quieter and more expensive per day. Pick Goa for three days of sun and Kerala for a week that changes scenery every day.

Kerala or Coorg? Coorg is a coffee weekend five hours from Bengaluru; Kerala is a flight to Kochi and a week. Wayanad, just across the border from Coorg, is the piece of Kerala that competes with it on a weekend.
