Places to visit in Murudeshwar

  • Murudeshwar Temple: The Shiva temple on Kanduka hill with the sea on three sides, and the reason the town is on the map.
  • The Shiva statue: About 123 feet tall and visible from the road long before you arrive, one of the tallest statues of Shiva anywhere; it faces the sea and is best photographed in the late afternoon.
  • Raja Gopura: The twenty-storey temple tower at the entrance, with a lift to the top for the view down over the statue, the headland and the coastline.
  • Murudeshwar Beach: The sand below the headland, calm enough for a paddle outside the monsoon, with the statue above it.
  • Netrani Island: A small island about 19 km offshore, the best scuba diving on the Karnataka coast; boats leave from the town and run only outside the monsoon.
  • Statue Park: The sculpture groups around the temple depicting scenes from the epics, on the walk between the gopura and the statue.
  • The fort: A small old fort below the temple on the seaward side, a few minutes on foot and usually empty.
  • Idagunji: The Ganapati temple about 45 km north, on the way to Gokarna, and a common stop on the drive.
  • Apsarakonda Falls: A short waterfall and beach about 40 km north near Honnavar, usually paired with the drive up to Gokarna.

Opening hours and tickets

The temple is open through the day with a break around the middle of the day, and the lift up the Raja Gopura runs during temple hours for a small ticket — the queue for it is longest on weekends, festival days and late afternoon. The beach and the statue are open all day with no ticket. Netrani boats leave in the morning and do not run in the monsoon. Hours and ticket prices change, so confirm the day's timings with your trip captain before you plan around them.

What to eat

Coastal Karnataka vegetarian food is what the town does best: Udupi-style thalis, neer dosa, goli baje and filter coffee near the temple, with the seafood a short drive away at Bhatkal. Most sea-facing stays serve their own meals, which matters here because the town is small and shuts early.

Best time to visit Murudeshwar and how to reach

Best time

October to March is the season: clear skies, a calm sea and the Netrani boats running, with the clearest water for diving from December to March. April and May are hot and humid but quiet. June to September is the monsoon - the temple and the gopura stay open, but the sea is rough, the boats stop and swimming is unsafe.

  • June to September, 24 to 30°C: The monsoon: heavy rain, a rough sea, no boats to Netrani and swimming unsafe. The temple and the gopura stay open, and this is when Jog Falls inland is at its best.

What to pack

Light cotton, a hat and sunscreen — the headland has almost no shade and the walk from the gopura to the statue is all in the open. A dhoti, saree or salwar if you want to go inside the temple, and clothes you can change out of for the beach. Shoes you can slip off easily, since the temple is barefoot and the stone gets hot by midday. A swimsuit and a towel for Netrani, a rain shell from June to September, and a dry bag if you are diving.

Getting there

Murudeshwar is about 750 km from Hyderabad. The fixed-date group trips leave on Friday night and travel overnight by road to the coast, so the weekend starts at Gokarna and comes down to Murudeshwar. Travelling independently, the usual route is a train or flight to Mangalore and about three hours north up NH66, or the Konkan line to Murudeshwar's own station.

About 500 km from Bangalore, a 9 to 10 hour overnight journey by road, which is how the Bangalore group departures travel. By rail the usual way is to Mangalore or Udupi and up the Konkan line to Murudeshwar station, which is a few minutes from the temple - one of the few places on this coast where the train sets you down at the sight itself.

Chennai to Murudeshwar is about 900 km, so most travellers fly to Mangalore and drive about three hours north, or take the train to Mangalore and continue on the Konkan line. A private trip can start with a pick-up at Murudeshwar station, Mangalore airport or Goa.

Murudeshwar or Gokarna?

Murudeshwar or Gokarna? They are two hours apart and answer different questions rather than competing. Gokarna is a beach trip: five beaches along a cliff path, cafes, and two or three slow nights. Murudeshwar is a temple and a viewpoint, half a day of it, on a headland with the sea on three sides. Most travellers do not choose — they book the pair, which is why nearly every trip on this page calls at both.

October to March is the season: clear skies, a calm sea and the Netrani boats running, with the clearest water for diving from December to March. April and May are hot and humid but quiet. June to September is the monsoon - the temple and the gopura stay open, but the sea is rough, the boats stop and swimming is unsafe.
