Places to visit in Malaysia

11 places most Malaysia trips are built around, in the order a first visit usually takes them. Four days covers Kuala Lumpur with the Petronas Towers, the old city and a Batu Caves and Genting Highlands day; five or six days adds Langkawi for the SkyCab, the Sky Bridge and a speedboat island-hopping day; seven days pairs three nights in Singapore with Kuala Lumpur and Genting, and nine days fits Singapore, Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur without a rushed day.

  • Petronas Twin Towers: The 452-metre twin towers at KLCC, with the Skybridge and observation deck on timed tickets, and the park and fountains at their feet.
  • Batu Caves: The Hindu shrine in a limestone cave up 272 rainbow-painted steps, beside the 43-metre Murugan statue; busiest at Thaipusam in January or February.
  • Genting Highlands: The hilltop resort at about 1,800 metres, an hour from the city: the Awana SkyWay cable car, Genting SkyWorlds theme park and the Chin Swee temple.
  • KL Tower: The telecom tower on Bukit Nanas with an observation deck, a glass Sky Box and the forest park at its base.
  • Putrajaya: The planned administrative capital: the pink-domed Putra Mosque, the Perdana Putra and a boat on the lake, a half day from KL.
  • Malacca: The UNESCO port town two hours south: the Dutch Square, Jonker Street's weekend night market and the river cruise.
  • Langkawi SkyCab and Sky Bridge: The cable car up Gunung Mat Cincang and the curved bridge hanging over the rainforest, the island's main sight.
  • Langkawi island hopping and Pantai Cenang: A speedboat to Pulau Dayang Bunting's lake and the eagle-feeding stop, and the sunset beach with the duty-free shops behind it.
  • Penang: George Town: The UNESCO old town of street art, clan houses and hawker food, plus Penang Hill and the Kek Lok Si temple.
  • Cameron Highlands: The tea plantations, strawberry farms and cool air at 1,500 metres, three to four hours from KL.
  • Sunway Lagoon: The water and theme park in Petaling Jaya, the family day on a KL itinerary.

Malaysia trip cost from India

Malaysia packages from India start at ₹14,680 per person: ₹14,680 for 4 days, ₹25,683 for 6 days and ₹54,600 for 7 days. That is a land package: the hotels, airport transfers, the sightseeing and activities listed on each trip page, and a planner on WhatsApp through the trip. Flights from India are not included; they are quoted separately so you pick the airline and dates. Visa and entry fees are paid separately unless the trip page lists them.

Malaysia is one of the easiest foreign holidays from South India: visa-free for Indians until 31 December 2026 (as of September 2026), four to four and a half hours non-stop from Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with a large Tamil community that makes vegetarian and South Indian food easy to find, and a city with a cool hill resort an hour's drive away and an island an hour's flight away. The price moves with the hotel category, the month and the group size, so share those three and you get an exact quote rather than a starting figure.

Malaysia visa, flights and the best time to go

Visa: Indian passport holders can currently visit Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism, business or social visits; the waiver runs until 31 December 2026 (as of September 2026), so check the rule again if you travel after that. Submit the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within the three days before you land. Carry a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed return ticket and a confirmed hotel booking, because immigration can ask to see them.

Flights: Non-stop flights to Kuala Lumpur take about four hours from Chennai, four and a quarter from Bengaluru and four and a half from Hyderabad, and about five and a half hours from Mumbai and Delhi, on AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo and Batik Air between them, plus Air India from Delhi; Chennai also has a non-stop to Penang, and Langkawi is a one-hour flight on from Kuala Lumpur.

Best time: December to February is the driest stretch for Langkawi and the best time to pair the city with the island; Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the busiest and dearest weeks. Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year; its wettest months are March to April and October to December, with November the wettest, and the rain usually comes as short afternoon storms. Langkawi is wettest from August to October, when island-hopping boats can be called off, while Genting Highlands stays cool, about 12 to 22°C, in every month.

Money: Malaysian ringgit (MYR, written RM). Cards work in hotels, malls and most restaurants; carry cash for hawker stalls, night markets and small shops. India's NPCI International and Malaysia's PayNet signed an agreement in February 2026 to let Indian UPI apps pay at DuitNow QR codes, but no start date was announced and we could not confirm it is working as of September 2026, so do not count on UPI; take a forex card and some cash.
