Malaysia is one of the easiest foreign family holidays from South India: no visa for Indian passport holders until 31 December 2026 (as of September 2026), four to four and a half hours non-stop from Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and South Indian and vegetarian food easy to find. Children get a city with a skybridge and a fountain park, a cool hill resort with a theme park about an hour's drive away, and an island an hour's flight away. Prices are per person on twin sharing; tell the planner the children's ages so the rooms and the price are set for your family. The Sunway trip starts with a night safari in Singapore, spends a day at a film studio theme park there and a day at the Sunway Lagoon theme and water park in Subang Jaya, just outside Kuala Lumpur. The Singapore trips need a Singapore visa for every traveller, which Malaysia does not; Singapore or Malaysia helps if you are choosing between them.
The pace that works with children
Plan one big outing a day. Kuala Lumpur is about 24 to 34°C and humid all year, with rain usually as short afternoon storms, so do the outdoor part in the morning and keep the afternoon for a mall or the hotel. Reach Batu Caves before 8 am, ahead of the heat and the crowds; 272 steps is a real climb for small legs, and the monkeys go for food, so keep snacks in a closed bag. Genting Highlands is about 12 to 22°C, so pack a light jacket for the hills.
On the 6-day trip, day 3 is long: Batu Caves, Genting and an evening flight to Langkawi. With young children, ask the planner to add a night in Kuala Lumpur so the hills get a day of their own, with time for the SkyWorlds theme park; it is closed on Tuesdays except Malaysian public and school holidays.
Where to stay with children
- KLCC, Kuala Lumpur: beside KLCC Park and the Petronas Towers, so the evening fountain, free to watch, is close by.
- Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur: Pavilion mall and the Jalan Alor food street; the streets are busy, so carry bags on the side away from the road.
- Pantai Cenang, Langkawi: the main beach, with water sports, sunset restaurants and many of the island-hopping boats.
Our trip prices start with standard 3-star stays. One step up, a single November 2026 search put 4-star city hotels in Kuala Lumpur and 3 to 4 star beach hotels in Langkawi at roughly ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 a night for two adults, so ask for a family room or connecting rooms when you enquire. Foreign guests also pay a tourism tax of RM10 per room per night, charged by the booking site or collected at check-in.
Tickets for children, September 2026
- Petronas Twin Towers, Skybridge and Observation Deck: children 2 to 12 RM65 on weekdays and RM69 at weekends, about ₹1,500 to ₹1,600, under-2s free; adults RM127 to RM137. Closed on the first and third Monday of every month. The visit is part of our 4-day and 6-day trips.
- Genting SkyWorlds theme park: priced by height, not age. Under 90 cm is free, 90 to 110 cm is RM65, about ₹1,500, and taller children pay the adult rate of RM168 bought online at least a day ahead, or RM198 at the gate.
- Awana SkyWay cable car up to Genting: the official fare table lists no child fare, only the RM11 one-way standard fare, and children under 90 cm ride free.
- KLCC Park and its lake fountain: free to watch in the evening.

Food, documents and the practical questions parents ask
- Food: about 6.6% of Malaysia's population is of Indian origin, mostly Tamil, so dosa, idli, banana-leaf meals and vegetarian restaurants are common, especially in Brickfields. Mamak shops serve roti canai across the country, and a hawker or food-court meal is about RM12 to RM25.
- Passports and arrival cards: every passport, children's included, should be valid for at least six months, and each traveller needs a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card filed within the three days before landing; details are in Malaysia visa-free entry for Indians.
- Dress: shoulders and knees covered at temples and mosques; carry a wrap for Batu Caves.
- Plugs: UK-style Type G three-pin sockets, so bring an adapter for chargers and tablets.
- Money: a forex card and some cash; do not count on UPI working as of September 2026.
When to go with children
The May and June school holidays are the dearest months to fly from India. Kuala Lumpur and Genting are fine then, with June and July among the city's driest months, but Langkawi gets steadily wetter from May. December to February is the best time for Langkawi, though Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the busiest, dearest weeks. Around Deepavali, in October or November, Kuala Lumpur is in its wettest weeks, though the rain comes in short afternoon bursts, while Langkawi's boats can be called off in September and October; a city and hills trip copes better with that weather.
