The best way to spend six days in Malaysia is two nights in Kuala Lumpur and three in Langkawi, with Batu Caves and Genting Highlands on the day you move between them. You get the Petronas Twin Towers and the old city, the cool air of the hills, a cable car above the Langkawi rainforest and a speedboat day among the islands. Day 1: Land in Kuala Lumpur, KLCC Park and Jalan Alor
From South India the non-stop flight to Kuala Lumpur takes four to four and a half hours, shortest from Chennai. Indian passport holders are visa-free until 31 December 2026 (as of September 2026) but use the manual immigration counters, so allow time. Transfer to a hotel in Bukit Bintang or KLCC; on your own, the KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes from Terminal 1 for RM55. Spend the evening at the fountain in KLCC Park below the Petronas Towers, free to watch, and eat on Jalan Alor, the food street in Bukit Bintang.
Day 2: Petronas Twin Towers, Merdeka Square and Brickfields
Our trip's half-day city tour drives past KL Tower, the National Monument and the National Mosque and includes a timed Petronas Twin Towers ticket: you cross the Skybridge on level 41 and go up to the observation deck on level 86. On your own, book the slot online in advance, from RM127 for a non-Malaysian adult on a weekday, and remember the visit is closed on the first and third Monday of every month. Spend the afternoon around Merdeka Square, where the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Central Market and Chinatown's Petaling Street are all within walking distance, and have dinner in Brickfields, the Indian quarter next to KL Sentral, for banana-leaf rice.
Day 3: Batu Caves, Genting Highlands and the flight to Langkawi
The long day. Check out early and reach Batu Caves, 13 km north of the city, before 8 am if you can: 272 painted steps climb to the Temple Cave beside the 42.7-metre golden Murugan statue. Wear long trousers or carry a wrap, since visitors in shorts may be asked to cover up, and keep food away from the monkeys. Then go up to Genting Highlands, about 1,800 metres high and 12 to 22°C, on the Awana SkyWay cable car, a ride of about ten minutes over the rainforest with a free stop at the Chin Swee Caves Temple. There is no time for the SkyWorlds theme park on this plan. In the evening, fly from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, about 1 hour 5 minutes, and transfer to your hotel.
Between 12 and 16 October 2026 the Awana SkyWay is closed for maintenance, and the Genting SkyWay runs instead.
Day 4: Langkawi SkyCab, the Sky Bridge and a Pantai Cenang sunset
Ride the SkyCab up Gunung Machinchang, about 15 minutes to a top station at 708 metres; on a clear day you can see southern Thailand. From the top, the SkyGlide inclined lift or a walk down leads to the Sky Bridge, a 125-metre curved bridge hung from a single pylon above the rainforest; ask the planner whether your ticket covers it. Our trip's sightseeing day adds the Atma Alam Batik Art Village and Eagle Square by the harbour. Finish on Pantai Cenang, Langkawi's main beach, for the sunset.
Days 5 and 6: Island hopping, then home
Day 5 is a speedboat morning around the islands: Dayang Bunting and the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, Pulau Singa Besar for its birdlife, and the white sand of Beras Basah, where water sports cost extra. Langkawi is a duty-free archipelago of 99 islands and a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the afternoon is free for the beach or the shops. If the sea is rough, most likely from August to October, ask the planner about a boat trip through the mangroves, limestone cliffs and bat caves of Kilim Karst Geoforest Park instead.
On day 6, fly home from Langkawi through Kuala Lumpur. IndiGo has flown Bengaluru to Langkawi non-stop, about 3 hours 50 minutes, but flight-schedule listings showed no departures in September 2026 and a restart in October; we could not confirm that with IndiGo, so check before you plan around it.
Where to stay and how to get around
- Kuala Lumpur: Bukit Bintang, for Pavilion mall and the Jalan Alor food street, or KLCC, for the Petronas Towers and the park. A 4-star city hotel runs roughly ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 a night.
- Langkawi: Pantai Cenang, for the beach, the sunset restaurants and many of the boat trips. A 3 to 4 star beach hotel runs roughly ₹3,500 to ₹8,000.
- Getting around: Grab in both places; Genting Highlands is about 58 km from the city by road; Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi is a flight of about 1 hour 5 minutes, not included in the land package.
Hotel ranges are a rough guide from a single November 2026 search for two adults, and foreign guests pay a tourism tax of RM10 per room per night on top.
Five, four or nine days, and our trips on this route

- Five days: fly home on the afternoon of day 5, after the speedboat morning. It works, but it leaves no spare day if a boat trip is called off.

How many days are enough for Malaysia?
Four days covers Kuala Lumpur with a Batu Caves and Genting Highlands day; five or six days adds Langkawi for the SkyCab, the Sky Bridge and a speedboat island-hopping day. Six days does both without rushing the island.
How do you get from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi?
By air: the flight takes about 1 hour 5 minutes on AirAsia, Batik Air or Malaysia Airlines. It is not included in our 6-day land package; the planner quotes it separately with your international flights.
Can you visit Batu Caves and Genting Highlands on the same day?
Yes. Batu Caves is 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur and most plans stop there on the way to or from Genting Highlands, about an hour's drive from the city. Reach the caves before 8 am to beat the heat and the crowds.
