Day-wise plan

Every day runs on a private cab - the order and pace are yours to change.

1Day 1 - Trip begins at Delhi - Delhi to Haridwar, where the yatra begins
  • Your private cab collects you in Delhi and drives to Haridwar, the traditional gateway to the four dhams.
  • Check in and rest, since the mountain days ahead are long.
  • In the evening attend the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
  • Night in Haridwar.
2Day 2 - Haridwar to Barkot with yatra registration en route
  • Drive to Rishikesh and complete the compulsory Char Dham yatra registration at the Tapovan counter, which includes a biometric and photo record. Carry original photo ID for every traveller.
  • Continue on winding roads to Barkot, the base town for Yamunotri.
  • Check in and take it easy so your body adjusts to the gain in altitude.
  • Night in Barkot.
3Day 3 - Yamunotri darshan, the first dham
  • Early drive to Janki Chatti, the last point a vehicle can reach.
  • From there it is about six kilometres on foot to the temple, climbing steadily. A pony or palanquin can be hired at the trailhead at your own cost.
  • At roughly 3,290 metres, seek blessings at the Yamunotri shrine and, if you wish, bathe in the hot spring at Surya Kund.
  • Walk or ride back down to Janki Chatti and drive to Barkot. Night in Barkot.
4Day 4 - Barkot to Uttarkashi along the Bhagirathi
  • Check out and drive to Uttarkashi, following the Bhagirathi through the Garhwal ranges.
  • Check in and keep the day light.
  • If you have energy, visit Kashi Vishwanath temple by the river, Kuteti Devi for the valley view, or the main bazaar.
  • Night in Uttarkashi.
5Day 5 - Gangotri darshan, the second dham
  • Long day drive up to Gangotri at about 3,100 metres, the source region of the Ganga.
  • Offer prayers at the eighteenth century Gangotri temple and see Bhagirath Shila, the rock linked to King Bhagirath's penance.
  • The river water here is icy; a symbolic dip is common but take care.
  • Drive back down to Uttarkashi for the night.
6Day 6 - Uttarkashi to Guptkashi
  • A long transfer day across the Garhwal, alongside the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers.
  • Check in at Guptkashi and rest, as tomorrow is the hardest day of the yatra.
  • Optional stroll through the local market and the old Vishwanath temple.
  • Night in Guptkashi.
7Day 7 - Kedarnath darshan, the third dham
  • Drive to Sonprayag, then take the shared government jeep to Gaurikund, the trailhead, paid locally.
  • From Gaurikund it is roughly sixteen to eighteen kilometres uphill to Kedarnath at about 3,580 metres. Walk it, or hire a pony or doli locally.
  • A helicopter shuttle from the valley helipads is the alternative for those who cannot trek. It is not part of the package cost and must be booked well ahead.
  • Darshan at the ancient stone Kedarnath temple, one of the twelve jyotirlingas. Night in basic accommodation at Kedarnath.
8Day 8 - Back down from Kedarnath to Guptkashi
  • Catch first light on the peaks behind the temple before you start down.
  • Descend to Gaurikund, then the jeep leg to Sonprayag, paid locally.
  • Drive on to Guptkashi and check in for a proper night's rest.
  • Night in Guptkashi.
9Day 9 - Guptkashi to Pipalkoti
  • Scenic transfer through the river confluences of the Alaknanda valley.
  • Arrive at Pipalkoti, a quiet halt town on the Badrinath road, and check in.
  • Easy evening in the mountains before the final dham.
  • Night in Pipalkoti.
10Day 10 - Badrinath darshan and Mana village
  • Drive up to Badrinath at about 3,300 metres, the last of the four dhams.
  • Bathe in the hot spring at Tapt Kund before darshan at the brightly painted temple.
  • Continue a few kilometres to Mana, the last village before the Tibet border, and see Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and the natural rock bridge at Bheem Pul.
  • Return to Pipalkoti for the night.
11Day 11 - Down to Rishikesh past the sacred confluences
  • Long descent towards Rishikesh with stops at the river meetings.
  • Pause at Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini joins the Alaknanda, and at Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda become the Ganga.
  • Check in at Rishikesh and, if you are up for it, attend the aarti at Triveni Ghat.
  • Night in Rishikesh.
12Day 12 - Trip ends at Delhi - Rishikesh to Delhi and departure
  • Check out after breakfast and drive down to Delhi.
  • Drop at Majnu ka Tilla or Kashmere Gate for your onward journey home.

Haridwar questions, answered

I am not from Delhi - can I still take this trip?
Yes. The trip starts at Delhi, which every Indian city reaches by flight or train. Reach Delhi and everything after that, from pickup to final drop, is on us. Flying into Dehradun instead is easy to arrange too.
Is this a group departure or a private trip?
This is a fully private trip: your own cab, your own dates and your own pace. The route here is the recommended plan, and we adjust it to your liking when you enquire.
What is the best season for this trip?
The Char Dham temples open around late April or early May and close by late October or November, so the yatra only runs in that window. May, June, September and October are the steadiest; the July to September monsoon brings landslides on the hill roads.
How hard are the Kedarnath and Yamunotri walks?
Yamunotri is about 6 km each way and Kedarnath about 16 to 18 km from Gaurikund at roughly 3,580 m. Ponies and palanquins are available at both, at your own cost, and a Kedarnath helicopter can be added subject to weather and slots.
Is yatra registration needed?
Yes. Char Dham registration with biometric capture is compulsory and we arrange it for you, so carry original photo ID for everyone travelling. Since much of the route sits above 3,000 m, the plan keeps the climb gradual for altitude.
What should I know about the Ganga aarti?
The evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri starts around sunset and the ghat fills early, so your driver drops you in good time. Modest wear is expected, footwear stays off near the steps, and leather items are best left in the cab.
