Uttar Pradesh holds the two things most first-time visitors to India come for, and they could hardly be less alike. Agra has the Taj Mahal, which is worth the early alarm — at sunrise the marble changes colour as you watch and the crowds are still thin — with Agra Fort and the abandoned city at Fatehpur Sikri nearby. Varanasi is the other pole: the oldest continuously lived-in city many people will ever visit, its ghats stepping down to the Ganga, the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh and a dawn boat that shows you the whole riverfront waking up. Between and around them the state is a pilgrim map — Ayodhya, Mathura and Vrindavan for the Krishna towns, Prayagraj at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna. Lucknow is the change of pace: Awadhi cooking worth planning a day around, the Bara Imambara and its labyrinth, and a slower, more courtly city than anywhere else on the list. Our trips run two to eleven days, private, and often continue into Delhi and Jaipur as a wider northern circuit.
