They get compared because they look interchangeable on a map: two Tamil Nadu hill stations, both about three hours up a ghat road from a plains city, both cold in December. Spend a weekend in each and they are obviously not the same trip.
The short answer
Ooty if this is your first hill station in the south, if you are travelling with children or parents, or if you want something planned every day. Kodaikanal if you have done Ooty, if you would rather walk than drive between sights, or if the point of the trip is to do very little.
Altitude and cold
Ooty is at 2,240 m, Kodaikanal at about 2,100 m. That small difference shows up at night: Ooty runs 5 to 20°C through December and January with frost on some mornings, while Kodaikanal bottoms out nearer 8°C. Both are mild by Himalayan standards and both are colder than people pack for. Carry one layer more than you think.
What there actually is to do
Ooty is busier and more built up, and that is the point of it. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is UNESCO-listed and the hour-long Ooty to Coonoor leg is the easy version of the ride. Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, clearest before the mid-morning mist. The Government Botanical Garden was laid out in 1848 and the Rose Garden holds around 20,000 varieties on a terraced slope above town. Then Coonoor, twenty minutes down the hill, with Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose and the tea estates.
Kodaikanal is built around one star-shaped lake with a cycle path round it. Coaker’s Walk is a mile of cliff path with a telescope house at the end. Pillar Rocks are three 400-foot granite pillars eight km out, with Guna Caves beside them, and Bryant Park is twenty acres of terraced garden by the lake. Berijam lake needs a forest permit issued in limited numbers each morning, which is either a nuisance or the reason to go, depending on the traveller.
Getting there
Ooty: Coimbatore is 85 km below, about three hours up the ghat, or the classic Mettupalayam toy train which climbs through Coonoor in four and a half hours. From Bengaluru it is 270 km through Mysuru and Bandipur, ending on 36 hairpin bends.
Kodaikanal: Madurai is the nearest airport and main station, 120 km and about three hours away — which is why the Meenakshi Amman temple ends up on so many Kodaikanal itineraries, since it is on the way rather than a detour. Kodai Road station is 80 km out with a two-hour climb.
Which one for a family
Ooty, on balance. Everything is close together, nothing asks for a climb, and a train ride and a boat ride fill two afternoons without anyone walking far. Kodaikanal’s sights are more spread out and Coaker’s Walk, while flat, is a genuine walk.
Or do both
They are 240 km apart, five to six hours through the plains with Coimbatore roughly in the middle, so pairing them is the standard longer trip rather than a stretch. Four days gives each a full day. Five or six adds Coonoor’s tea estates or Berijam lake, and stops the drive south from eating a whole day.
