Karnataka covers more ground than most people expect it to. Hampi in the north is a boulder-strewn river valley scattered with the ruins of Vijayanagara, once one of the largest cities in the world and now quiet enough to cycle round. Mysore is the opposite kind of place — ordered, royal, and lit up at the palace on Sunday evenings. West of both, the coffee country begins: Coorg and Chikmagalur, hill roads through estates, waterfalls that only really run after the rains. Then the land drops to the coast at Gokarna, where the beaches are reached on foot over headlands and the town itself is a temple town first and a beach town second. Dandeli adds river rafting and forest to the same corner. Our Karnataka trips run from a single day to eight, because a Bangalore weekend and a full northern circuit through Hampi are both Karnataka.
