Best time
October to February is the season for most trips: cool, clear days for Ajanta, Ellora and the temples and the best weather in the hills. June to September is the monsoon, when the Sahyadris are green, the waterfalls run and the trek weekends depart, but rain is heavy and some spots close at short notice. March to May is hot on the Deccan around Aurangabad and Shirdi, though the hills stay milder.
- October to February, 10 to 30°C: The main season: clear, cool days for Ajanta, Ellora and the temples, and the best weather in the hills; Kaas flowers into October and Mahabaleshwar's strawberries start around winter.
- March to May, 20 to 40°C: Hot on the Deccan around Aurangabad, Nashik and Shirdi, so the cave days start early; the hill stations stay milder and get busy in the May holidays.
- June to September, 20 to 28°C: The monsoon: the Sahyadris turn green, the waterfalls run and the Hyderabad trek weekends depart. Rain is heavy, trails and fort steps are slippery, and dams, viewpoints and boating can close at short notice.
What to pack
For October to February, light cotton for the day and a light jacket or sweater for the hill-station evenings and early starts. For the monsoon, a rain jacket or poncho, quick-dry clothes and shoes with real grip, since the Lohagad steps and the trek trails stay wet all day; carry a backpack rather than a trolley bag for the walk into Matheran. For the caves and temples, comfortable walking shoes you can slip off, modest clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle for the Deccan sun.
