Places to visit in Ladakh

These are the places Ladakh trips are built from. Each trip page lists exactly which of them it covers, and a private trip can swap one for another.

  • Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa: The old royal palace above the bazaar and the white stupa across the valley, the easy first-day sights while you acclimatise.
  • Thiksey and Hemis monasteries: Thiksey's hilltop gompa for the morning prayers, and Hemis, the largest in Ladakh, home of the summer Hemis festival.
  • Khardung La: The high pass on the road from Leh to Nubra; a photo stop only, because the altitude is not a place to linger.
  • Nubra Valley: Diskit monastery and its giant Maitreya Buddha, and the sand dunes at Hunder with the double-humped Bactrian camels.
  • Turtuk: The Balti village at the far end of the Shyok valley, among apricot orchards, opened to travellers in 2010.
  • Pangong Tso: The long high-altitude lake over the Chang La pass, changing colour through the day; most trips spend a night in the camps on its shore.
  • Tso Moriri: The remote lake in the Changthang plateau with the village of Korzok on its shore, for the longer trips.
  • Hanle and Umling La: The observatory and dark-sky village of Hanle, and the Umling La road beyond it, on the grand-circuit and bike expeditions.
  • Magnetic Hill, Pathar Sahib and the Sangam: The Srinagar road stops: the hill where cars seem to roll uphill, the gurudwara, and the meeting of the Indus and Zanskar rivers.
  • Lamayuru and Alchi: The moonland landscape around Lamayuru monastery and the thousand-year-old murals at Alchi, on the way to or from Srinagar.

A 7 day Ladakh trip, day by day

A private trip runs the same plan at your own pace; a group departure follows it to the minute.

  • Day 1: fly into Leh and rest; the altitude needs the first day off.
  • Day 2: an easy day in Leh: Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and the bazaar.
  • Day 3: the Srinagar road: Hall of Fame, Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and the Indus–Zanskar Sangam, or Thiksey and Hemis monasteries.
  • Day 4: over Khardung La to the Nubra Valley: Diskit monastery and the Hunder dunes.
  • Day 5: Turtuk village, or across the Shyok road to Pangong Tso for sunset and a night by the lake.
  • Day 6: Pangong at sunrise, then back to Leh over the Chang La pass.
  • Day 7: the flight home from Leh.

Best time to visit Ladakh and how to reach

Best time

June to September is the season, when every road and circuit is open and the bike expeditions run; June and July are the busiest, September is calmer. April, May and October are cold shoulder months flown into Leh, and November to March is winter, for frozen lakes and serious cold.

  • April to May, 0 to 20°C: The shoulder season: Leh warms up and flights are the way in; the high roads and passes open through May and June as they are cleared.
  • June to September, 10 to 25°C: The season: every road and circuit open, Pangong blue, the Hemis festival in June or July and the bike expeditions running. June and July are the busiest; September is calmer.
  • October, -5 to 15°C: Crisp, golden and quiet; nights turn freezing and the Manali road closes with the first heavy snow.
  • November to March, -20 to 5°C: Winter Ladakh: flights only, frozen lakes and serious cold, for travellers who come for the snow and the silence.

What to pack

Layers for every month: thermals, a fleece, a down or padded jacket and a woollen cap, because Pangong and Nubra drop close to freezing at night even in July. Sunglasses with UV protection, SPF 50, lip balm and a scarf for the dust on the passes; sturdy shoes; a refillable bottle for the two to three litres of water a day the altitude needs; and any altitude medicine only on your doctor's advice.

Getting there

From Hyderabad, fly to Leh; most itineraries connect through Delhi, which has the most flights into Leh. The bike expeditions and most private trips start at Leh airport, and the Zanskar and Manali–Leh–Srinagar trips start in Delhi. Plan the first two days in Leh as rest, since flying straight to 3,500 m needs the time.

From Bengaluru, fly to Leh, usually connecting through Delhi. Trips start at Leh airport, or in Delhi for the overland Zanskar and Manali–Leh–Srinagar routes, and keep the first two days easy for the altitude.

From Chennai, fly to Leh through Delhi. Most trips start at Leh airport with two easy days before the high passes; the overland trips start in Delhi and reach Leh by the Manali or Srinagar road in the warmer months.

Permits and fees

Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit for Ladakh; the Leh council's permit portal says it applies only to foreign tourists. Visitors pay the council's environment (green) fee of ₹400 per person online at lahdclehpermit.in before heading to the Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri or Hanle circuits, and the checkposts ask for the slip and a photo ID. On our trips the planner registers the group and pays it with your ID details. Foreign nationals need a permit as well; tell the planner before booking.

Every Ladakh trip we run

This page answers one question. The hub lists the whole Ladakh catalogue — every length, every departure city, group departures and private trips — with the same prices.

From people just like you

During this memorable trip, it wasn't merely a voyage but an enriching adventure shared with dear friends and family. The experience proved to be exceptionally comfortable, justifying every penny spent. Opting for this option was a decision I would have regretted not making, given the unparalleled comfort and joy it brought. A pivotal factor in this delightful journey was our travel guide, Deepika. Her remarkable care and attention to detail ensured that every moment was free of discomfort, making this expedition truly special.

Our Keral trip was good, it was a well organised and traveloger team took care of everything so well. However, our trip was during christmas and obviously all the places were crowed and roads were blocked. Also, it was informed to us that the places will be crowed. So, we had no expectations and had good vacation.
