Ladakh from Delhi: what travellers ask

Delhi is the easiest start for Ladakh. By air, Delhi has the most non-stop flights to Leh, about an hour and a half, and most private trips begin at Leh airport with the first two days kept easy for the altitude. By road, the Zanskar group trip, the bike expeditions and the overland trips leave Delhi on an overnight Volvo to Manali and cross into Ladakh through the Atal Tunnel and the high passes, a road usually open from about June to mid-October as the snow is cleared; the Srinagar road over Zoji La is the other way in.

From people just like you

During this memorable trip, it wasn't merely a voyage but an enriching adventure shared with dear friends and family. The experience proved to be exceptionally comfortable, justifying every penny spent. Opting for this option was a decision I would have regretted not making, given the unparalleled comfort and joy it brought. A pivotal factor in this delightful journey was our travel guide, Deepika. Her remarkable care and attention to detail ensured that every moment was free of discomfort, making this expedition truly special.

Our Keral trip was good, it was a well organised and traveloger team took care of everything so well. However, our trip was during christmas and obviously all the places were crowed and roads were blocked. Also, it was informed to us that the places will be crowed. So, we had no expectations and had good vacation.

Places to visit in Ladakh

These are the places Ladakh trips are built from. Each trip page lists exactly which of them it covers, and a private trip can swap one for another.

  • Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa: The old royal palace above the bazaar and the white stupa across the valley, the easy first-day sights while you acclimatise.
  • Thiksey and Hemis monasteries: Thiksey's hilltop gompa for the morning prayers, and Hemis, the largest in Ladakh, home of the summer Hemis festival.
  • Khardung La: The high pass on the road from Leh to Nubra; a photo stop only, because the altitude is not a place to linger.
  • Nubra Valley: Diskit monastery and its giant Maitreya Buddha, and the sand dunes at Hunder with the double-humped Bactrian camels.
  • Turtuk: The Balti village at the far end of the Shyok valley, among apricot orchards, opened to travellers in 2010.
  • Pangong Tso: The long high-altitude lake over the Chang La pass, changing colour through the day; most trips spend a night in the camps on its shore.
  • Tso Moriri: The remote lake in the Changthang plateau with the village of Korzok on its shore, for the longer trips.
  • Hanle and Umling La: The observatory and dark-sky village of Hanle, and the Umling La road beyond it, on the grand-circuit and bike expeditions.
  • Magnetic Hill, Pathar Sahib and the Sangam: The Srinagar road stops: the hill where cars seem to roll uphill, the gurudwara, and the meeting of the Indus and Zanskar rivers.
  • Lamayuru and Alchi: The moonland landscape around Lamayuru monastery and the thousand-year-old murals at Alchi, on the way to or from Srinagar.

A 7 day Ladakh trip, day by day

A private trip runs the same plan at your own pace; a group departure follows it to the minute.

  • Day 1: fly into Leh and rest; the altitude needs the first day off.
  • Day 2: an easy day in Leh: Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and the bazaar.
  • Day 3: the Srinagar road: Hall of Fame, Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and the Indus–Zanskar Sangam, or Thiksey and Hemis monasteries.
  • Day 4: over Khardung La to the Nubra Valley: Diskit monastery and the Hunder dunes.
  • Day 5: Turtuk village, or across the Shyok road to Pangong Tso for sunset and a night by the lake.
  • Day 6: Pangong at sunrise, then back to Leh over the Chang La pass.
  • Day 7: the flight home from Leh.

Ladakh trip cost from Delhi

Ladakh packages from Delhi start at ₹15,499 per person: ₹15,499 for 5 days, ₹22,900 for 6 days and ₹16,999 for 7 days. On a group departure that is the seat, the overnight travel from Delhi both ways, the stays on twin or triple sharing, the meals the trip page lists, the activities named on it and a Travloger trip captain for the whole trip.

What moves the price is the season, the stay category, whether the trip flies into Leh or drives in, and the group size. June to August is the dearest time for flights and hotels in Leh; a group bike expedition prices the bike, fuel and support into the seat, while a private trip prices the car and the rooms for your group. The flight to Leh, the green fee and anything not named on the trip page stay out of the fare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Ladakh bike trip packages from Delhi

The fixed-date bike expeditions ride out of Leh over Khardung La to Nubra and Pangong, and the longer ones to Umling La, Zanskar or from Manali to Srinagar, with a trip captain; each trip page lists the bike, the fuel and the support included.

2 trips on this page, from ₹30,000 per person: 11 Days Manali Leh Srinagar Bike Expedition (11D/10N, from ₹30,000); 13 Days Ladakh Zanskar Bike Expedition (13D/12N, from ₹41,500).

Leh, Nubra and Pangong packages from Delhi

The classic first trip: Leh for two easy days, Nubra's dunes and Diskit over Khardung La, and a night by Pangong on the way back.

4 trips on this page, from ₹15,499 per person: 5 Days Leh Ladakh Pangong Escape (5D/4N, from ₹15,499); 7 Days Leh Ladakh Nubra Turtuk Adventure (7D/6N, from ₹21,800); 6 Days Leh Ladakh Nubra Pangong Getaway (6D/5N, from ₹22,900); 6 Days Leh Ladakh Nubra Pangong Honeymoon (6D/5N, from ₹24,900).

Zanskar and Umling La packages from Delhi

The expeditions past the usual circuit: the Zanskar valley, Tso Moriri, Hanle's dark skies and the Umling La road, on longer trips with more time at height.

3 trips on this page, from ₹16,999 per person: 7 Days Zanskar Valley Group Trip (7D/6N, from ₹16,999); 13 Days Ladakh Zanskar Bike Expedition (13D/12N, from ₹41,500); 12 Days Ladakh Hanle Umling La Adventure (12D/11N, from ₹47,000).

Manali, Leh and Srinagar road trip packages from Delhi

The overland way in: two days on the Manali–Leh road or through Kargil from Srinagar, which climbs gradually and turns the drive itself into the trip; both roads open only in the warmer months.

3 trips on this page, from ₹30,000 per person: 11 Days Manali Leh Srinagar Bike Expedition (11D/10N, from ₹30,000); 10 Days Delhi Manali Leh Overland Adventure (10D/9N, from ₹30,999); 11 Days Srinagar Leh Manali Adventure (11D/10N, from ₹34,499).

Ladakh for friends, couples and families from Delhi

Friends and solo travellers: 3 fixed-date group trips from ₹16,999, the bikes or road travel from the start point and a trip captain included, rooms shared by gender: 7 Days Zanskar Valley Group Trip (7D/6N, from ₹16,999); 11 Days Manali Leh Srinagar Bike Expedition (11D/10N, from ₹30,000); 13 Days Ladakh Zanskar Bike Expedition (13D/12N, from ₹41,500).

Couples: 2 plans with the quieter stays and private transfers, from ₹24,900: 6 Days Leh Ladakh Nubra Pangong Honeymoon (6D/5N, from ₹24,900); 7 Days Leh Ladakh Stok Hemis Honeymoon (7D/6N, from ₹31,999).

Families and couples take the private trips: the same places at your own pace, with the room category and the car chosen for your group.

Ladakh group tour packages from Delhi: fixed dates and prices

3 fixed-date group departures from Delhi on this page, from ₹16,999 per person: 7 Days Zanskar Valley Group Trip (7D/6N, from ₹16,999); 11 Days Manali Leh Srinagar Bike Expedition (11D/10N, from ₹30,000); 13 Days Ladakh Zanskar Bike Expedition (13D/12N, from ₹41,500). The price is a seat on the trip: the bikes or road travel from the start point and a trip captain included from the first evening to the last.

A private Ladakh trip from Delhi is the other way to do it: your own car and driver, your own dates and your own pace, from ₹15,499 per person.

Cheapest Ladakh packages from Delhi, with prices

The three lowest prices on this page, per person: 5 Days Leh Ladakh Pangong Escape at ₹15,499 for 5D/4N; 7 Days Zanskar Valley Group Trip at ₹16,999 for 7D/6N; 7 Days Leh Ladakh Nubra Turtuk Adventure at ₹21,800 for 7D/6N. A group seat includes the travel from Delhi; a private trip's price is the land package and the journey is quoted with it. What moves the price is the season, the stay category, whether the trip flies into Leh or drives in, and the group size. June to August is the dearest time for flights and hotels in Leh; a group bike expedition prices the bike, fuel and support into the seat, while a private trip prices the car and the rooms for your group. Delhi to Ladakh: how to reach, and the best time

Best time

June to September is the season, when every road and circuit is open and the bike expeditions run; June and July are the busiest, September is calmer. April, May and October are cold shoulder months flown into Leh, and November to March is winter, for frozen lakes and serious cold.

  • April to May, 0 to 20°C: The shoulder season: Leh warms up and flights are the way in; the high roads and passes open through May and June as they are cleared.
  • June to September, 10 to 25°C: The season: every road and circuit open, Pangong blue, the Hemis festival in June or July and the bike expeditions running. June and July are the busiest; September is calmer.
  • October, -5 to 15°C: Crisp, golden and quiet; nights turn freezing and the Manali road closes with the first heavy snow.
  • November to March, -20 to 5°C: Winter Ladakh: flights only, frozen lakes and serious cold, for travellers who come for the snow and the silence.

What to pack

Layers for every month: thermals, a fleece, a down or padded jacket and a woollen cap, because Pangong and Nubra drop close to freezing at night even in July. Sunglasses with UV protection, SPF 50, lip balm and a scarf for the dust on the passes; sturdy shoes; a refillable bottle for the two to three litres of water a day the altitude needs; and any altitude medicine only on your doctor's advice.

Delhi to Ladakh

Delhi is the easiest start for Ladakh. By air, Delhi has the most non-stop flights to Leh, about an hour and a half, and most private trips begin at Leh airport with the first two days kept easy for the altitude. By road, the Zanskar group trip, the bike expeditions and the overland trips leave Delhi on an overnight Volvo to Manali and cross into Ladakh through the Atal Tunnel and the high passes, a road usually open from about June to mid-October as the snow is cleared; the Srinagar road over Zoji La is the other way in.

Permits and fees

Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit for Ladakh; the Leh council's permit portal says it applies only to foreign tourists. Visitors pay the council's environment (green) fee of ₹400 per person online at lahdclehpermit.in before heading to the Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri or Hanle circuits, and the checkposts ask for the slip and a photo ID. On our trips the planner registers the group and pays it with your ID details. Foreign nationals need a permit as well; tell the planner before booking.

Ladakh or Spiti Valley?

Ladakh or Spiti Valley? Ladakh is the bigger trip: flights into Leh, more hotels, and the famous names — Pangong, Nubra's dunes, Khardung La, Tso Moriri. Spiti is quieter and rawer, reached only by road through Kinnaur or from Manali, with homestays and far fewer travellers. Ladakh suits a first Himalayan trip and anyone short of time; Spiti suits travellers who want the road and the villages more than the sights.
