Visakhapatnam - Vizag to everyone who lives there - is the easiest sea-and-hills break on the east coast. The city itself curves around its beaches: Ramakrishna Beach and the submarine museum set into the sand, Rushikonda's cleaner arc a short drive north, and Kailasagiri hill above it all with its cable car and giant Shiva-Parvati statue looking over the bay. The real reason most people come, though, is the climb behind the city: the Araku Valley, reached by one of the prettiest train rides in the south, through dozens of tunnels into coffee country. Araku brings tribal villages, coffee plantations, the Borra Caves' lit limestone chambers, and the viewpoint at Vanjangi where clouds pool below the ridge at dawn.
