Dandeli is sold on rafting, and the rafting is good. But ask people afterwards what they remember and it is usually the night at the camp or the drive to Syntheri Rocks.
How the weekend runs
Almost nobody spends two full days here. The standard trip is an overnight bus from Bengaluru or Hyderabad on Friday, a full day on the river on Saturday, a slower Sunday morning and the journey back that night. What follows assumes that shape.
Day 1 — the Kali
White-water rafting first, in the morning while the release is on: about nine kilometres of grade II and III rapids with a guide in each raft. It is wet rather than frightening — non-swimmers do it in life jackets every weekend.
The important caveat: the river level depends on the dam release, and on a low day the rafting is swapped for kayaking and a coracle on the calm stretch below. A camp that tells you this in advance is being honest, not evasive.
Afternoon: Syntheri Rocks, a 300-foot granite monolith deep in the forest with the Kaneri river running past it. It is a drive and then steps down, and it is the quietest thing you will do all weekend.

Day 2 — the forest, then home
A jeep safari in the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary at first light: gaur, langur, hornbills, and with real luck a black panther, which the sanctuary is genuinely known for. Dawn and late afternoon are the only two useful slots.
If you have the morning, Sathodi Falls is about an hour out, and the Supa dam backwaters are worth a boat at dusk — but on a two-day trip these usually become the reason to come back.
When to go
October to February is the window: the Kali still has water after the rains, the forest is green, and the nights are cool. March to May is hot and humid with the river lower and the rafting dependent on the release. June to September is the monsoon — the forest at its best, the falls full, and rafting and most water activities closed.
What the price does not cover
Rafting, kayaking, the coracle and the zip line are booked and paid at the camp, precisely because they depend on the day. Safari tickets at the sanctuary are separate. Lunches on travel days and anything personal are yours.

Pair it with the coast. Gokarna is three hours down the ghats, and the ruins-and-river combination — or beaches-and-rapids — is what most of our longer Dandeli trips actually are.
