Two of the most-booked weekends out of Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and the choice between them usually comes down to one thing: whether you want a place to stay or a place to visit.
The short answer
Coorg is where the stay is the trip — a coffee estate, a homestay, waterfalls and an elephant camp between long breakfasts. Ooty is where the town is the trip — gardens, a lake, a peak and a heritage railway, with something planned every day.
The distance, which matters more than the map suggests
Coorg is about 260 km from Bengaluru and five to six hours through Mysuru. Ooty is 270 km but takes six to seven, because the last stretch is 36 hairpin bends, and the Bandipur forest road that most routes use is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am. For a two-night weekend that difference is real.
From Hyderabad both are overnight journeys. Coorg is 12 to 13 hours by road; Ooty is about 900 km and has no station of its own, so the route runs through Coimbatore — overnight train (about 15 hours) or a 90-minute flight, then three hours up the Nilgiri ghat.
What Ooty has that Coorg does not
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway. It is UNESCO-listed, the Ooty to Coonoor leg takes about an hour, and it is genuinely the reason to choose Ooty. Book the seat; the ride is the point. Beyond it: Doddabetta at 2,637 m, the 1848 botanical garden, 20,000 roses on the slope above town, the boating lake, and Coonoor’s tea estates and viewpoints twenty minutes down the hill.
What Coorg has that Ooty does not
Homestays on working coffee estates, and a lot of them. Plus Abbey Falls eight km from Madikeri, the Dubare elephant camp on the Kaveri where the morning is spent with the elephants, Raja’s Seat for sunset, and Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe with its chanting at 5 pm.
Cost and crowds
Coorg usually works out slightly cheaper for the same nights, because the stays are homestays rather than hotels. Ooty has more rooms at every level, which keeps its floor low in peak season but also means far more people in May, when the flower show fills the town.
With children or parents
Ooty, generally. Everything is close together, the train and the boat fill two afternoons, and nothing asks for a climb. Coorg’s Mandalpatti sunrise involves a jeep on a rough track, which is worth knowing in advance — though it is optional, and an estate morning replaces it fine.
